Tron Project- New Switching power supply installed !! PICS included

I just received my switching power supply unit today from arcadeshop.com and wired it up took about 10 minutes to wire to the unit and another 20 minutes in the cab to rewire /mount/etc... They state that you should leave the old big blue power supply in the unit. So I figured that it was time to get rid of big blue completely and rewire a few things since all the voltages are on the new supply. Took only about 20 minutes to eliminate big blue and fired the unit up and it works ssswwweeettttttt!!!! Still need to just wire the AC in.  Back was killing me so tomorrow I will get to it. I am in the process of refinishing my cab as I just sanded it down. I had to replace the front wood as it was badly damaged.

Done:
- Sanded cab to bare wood
- Wired in new switching supply
- Replaced front wood


Next up- Not in any order:

- Repair bottom wood of cabinet as it is bending and damaged
- Repair cab damage- Reglue some areas
- New paint
- New T-molding
- Install Castors for easy movement
- Replace power cord and emi filter

Next month:
- New CP overlay and spinner sticker
- New inner art
- Repair shroud sticker that is in very good shape but peeling
- Install new white and blacklight bulbs
- Replace the old monitor with a new happ unit

Pics as promised !! You can see the switching supply I installed. I will take more pics when I ope up the back. But you can see the bottom wood and smaller back panel are replaced as the existing wood was rotted and twisted to hell . Also notice big blue has been removed !

Today or tomorrow I will sand and then prime the cab. All controls/glass/marquee have been taken off for prep work. Then emi filter and power cord change. I will also remove and install a real electrical outlet in place of that pathetic one in the pic.

Here is what I did:

Went to home depot spent about $10 on wood. Bought the white melamine pressboard. Bought pine for the front of the cab.

I wanted the bottom strong so pressboard was the way to go  for me.

Ok - Here is what I did:

- Flipped the cab on its side. Drilled 2 holes in the middle and cut a straight line with a jigsaw then used a chisel to clean up the edges so they were clean and straight.
- Then I removed the entire damaged piece, wheels and all.  I used a 1 1/2X1 1/2" piece of wood- actually are posts whick cost $1.20. Cut it to size then used it in the back for strength
- Next took out my paslode cordless nail gun and shot all wood in place to the sides and the reinforced piece. I also cut 2 smaller pieces for the 2 sides for added strength and shot them. I also used 2 wood screws on the reinforced bottom piece for strength.
- Then added castors for easy movement
- Next I flipped it on the other side and nailed all pieces just like the 1st side
- Once the cab was upright I removed and rewired the power supply
- I then removed the old back rotted wood and cut a new piece out

Thats about it for now. I will upload more pics when I have the time. Actually the front piece was more of a pain to do compared to the bottom.

Looking good. I'll be watching this closely as I have a Tron restore to do. It is fully working but the cabinet needs a lot.  Both side pieces will have to be replaced...

Update;

Primed unit- Just had to touch up corner with some filler. Painting black this weekend as long as I have time !

I also included another pic of my wiring job. Actually the wiring is a neat job. I just need to tie stap some of it together to tidy it up.

My tip to you Mcfreak would be to do one side then the other. All sides on the cab are grooved so once you try to remove them the pressboard will crumble apart in these areas. Flip the unit on its side first and take a good look on the bottom. I would do the bottom first for strength if it needs it then do one side. Be sure to reinforce all joints with small pieces of wood. And use a nailgun- its much cleaner !!

Update:

- Installed t-moulding
- Installed Both inner art set
- Installed back art behind monitor
- Installed shroud art set
- Replaced all bulbs in unit

Next up:

- Just need to order up both cp's, and an overlay to complete the cp area.

 I am also looking for a good coin door assembly and mine is all bent to hell . Then I will apply the side art. Then all complete 100%. Its about 70-75% complete now.

It is faded from the blacklight hitting it though.

Switcher question:

Are you still using the original MCR power board, or did you remove that too?

I see.  What did you do for the 3 pin connector that went to the original power supply?  Did you just also tap the 12v from the switcher for that?
I would like to use this kit for my spy hunter but it produces a loud hum through the speakers...I didn't know it when I purchased but this is common with spy hunter and this kit.

MY game plays with no hum at all. Maybe the hum sound was because arcadeshop stated to leave big blue and I said the hell with that ! Why leave a 20 year old piece of crap in the unit when all I could do was just rewire things to eliminate it. Took only a few extra minutes to rewire it. Yes I tapped into the switched supply.
