Crappy start to the weekend!
« on: September 01, 2007, 09:09:31 pm »
Well I'm kinda pissed.
More at myself for being dumb enough to get duped by a common lie/line, but still angry at the guy that screwed me over.

If you have been following my drama in other posts, I picked up a ridge racer sitdown off craigslist, the usual "just stopped working" line.

Fine. I'm not THAT dumb where I'm going to expect just a fuse blown :-)

Get it home, start wiping it down, checking connections, etc.. (Damn this thing was filthy).
Started pulling numbers off everything and came up with numbers for a med res chassis, not a standard as the game requires...
OK I think, this is strange, maybe the chassis is a dual res? (yeah, a stretch I know, but I couldn't see HOW the game was working previously otherwise..)

I hooked up a spare 25" standard res I had, and got the game to play on it.
"GREAT!" I think. "All I need to do is figure out what's wrong with the chassis and I'm in business, worst case, I send it off to get repaired if it's beyond me.."

I finally got a chance today to take a closer look at the chassis, and NO WAY was this ever working. Components missing, parts just dangling in there with no solder on 'em, and broken stuff.

My guess is that this was either an auction buy where an operator threw in a crap chassis to make it look good, or the seller I dealt with did it, either way I'm sure it didn't "just stop working".

So here I am stuck with a chassis that seems to be missing components, have broken components, and an unbelieveable amount of hacks. On top of it all, even if I wanted to send it off and get it fixed, it wouldn't work on this tube (I think, can anyone confirm?) http://www.radishville.com/arcade/tube.JPG , and it wouldn't work on this game anyway!

Anyone have any suggestions on how to proceed? (other than doing a driveby on their cars with a super soaker full of paint remover, that's already being considered :) )
How much would a chassis run me for a 33"? I don't think the 8-liners work higher that 27's, and I can't afford a new one from WG..

On a lighter note, I did have SOME luck with craigslist today (I know, I need to stay away :) ) .. Picked this up for $35, The kids are already hooked!

You got screwed as far as the monitor chassis goes.
That's a K8000 MEDIUM res only chassis.
I would definitly bring that to the sellers attention. (not that it will help, but it points him out a bit)

But you got an awesome deal on the air hockey table though.
I paid $100 for one similar without the fancy score keeper you have.
Not a technician . . . . just a DIY'er.

That's still a sweet cabinet ;)

Sorry to hear about your troubles though.

It just depends on how much you paid for the racer....

That hockey is a bargain !

I"d try to call the guy out on it. You probably won't get anything to really happen, but I'd do it just to hear what his reaction was. Despite the odds...maybe he isn't a scumbag and will give you money back.

It's a great-looking cab and at least you know everything but the monitor works. Are the tubes on medium res monitors different?
Brevity is not my strong suit.

I paid $150, not tons, though I told myself a repaired monitor would be worth the $$, so much for that :-)

The guy isn't answering emails, and he was in mid-move when I picked the cabinet, so I'm sure he's long gone.
Ah well, I'll just add it to my list of stupid things I've done and move on:-)

I'm working on chasing down a working chassis, so hopfully I'll be up and running soon!

The cabinet still has plenty to do on it anyway, you can see how filthy it is, plus I have some cig burns I need to see if I can minimize the appearance of.

Most of my weekend has been shot doing other things (had to change the alternator out in my car TWICE (bad out of the box, grrrr...)

I'd say karma made it even for that air hockey table and get on with your life.

lol, too true, the table makes it all better :-)
I think I had half the neighborhood kids in my garage tonight.
Must have been some sort of alignment of the stars or something, because they actually all got along, and even made up some sort of bracket system so they all had their turn, hehe.
