A new brand of Michael Myers
« on: August 31, 2007, 09:22:03 am »
I am going to see the new halloween movie tonight and I can't wait. I know it is going to be very hard to even hold a candle to the original but I am hoping Rob Zombie does as good a job as he did in House of a thousand corpses. It is getting mostly bad reviews, but a lot of those same reviews took shots at the original halloween, which I feel is one of the top 3 horror movies of all time. Anybody else going to see it?

Generally speaking it's getting pretty poor reviews.

No way. I thought House of 1000 Corpses was terrible.
This is a movie that didn't need to be remade being done by one of the directors least qualified to do it. I hope it bombs so he goes away.

This remake will be 100% dependent on what Zombie did to the score.  The score is the whole original movie.  Without that score the original is a boring movie... add the score and it makes your ass hurt from being so tense for a whole movie.

@ TOK-I liked house of a thousand corpses but hated devils rejects.

I really think this is going to be a good horror movie. I saw the trailers and it looks like zombie did a good job with the art direction. A lot of the scenes seemed very creepy visually. I suppose if I was expecting something like the first one(low body count, limited gore, horror through suspense) then I wouldn't want to see this movie. But I am interested in seeing zombies spin on this. I really think he loves the original and I think that will shine through in his work. The only thing I disagree with is the fact that zombie seems to be attributing external factors in Michaels youth to his rage. I always thought of Micheal as pure evil, like the devil. Like he was born that way.

Like I said in my OP, I dont expect this to hold a candle to the original. But I do expect it to be a good horror movie.

@chad-here is the soundtrack. I am curious to see how is going to use some of the songs.

   1. "These Are The Eyes"
   2. "Halloween Theme 2007" by Tyler Bates (based on Halloween score by John Carpenter)
   3. "Is The Boogieman Real?"
   4. "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" by Blue Öyster Cult
   5. "Are You Saying Michael Did This?"
   6. "Love Hurts" by Nazareth
   7. "I Hope She Likes Cripples"
   8. "Baby, I Love Your Way" by Peter Frampton
   9. "A Taco Deluxe Supreme"
  10. "Tom Sawyer" by Rush
  11. "Driven By Pure Animal Instinct"
  12. "Let It Ride" by Bachman Turner Overdrive
  13. "Trick Or Treat, Baby"
  14. "God Of Thunder" by Kiss
  15. "Satan's Mother"
  16. "1969" by Iggy Pop
  17. "Talking About The Anti-Christ"
  18. "Only Women Bleed" by Alice Cooper
  19. "Needs To Get Laid"
  20. "Halloween II" by The Misfits
  21. "Was That The Boogieman?"
  22. "The Shape Stalks Laurie" by Tyler Bates (based on Halloween score by John Carpenter)
  23. "The Scream"
  24. "Mr. Sandman" by Nan Vernon

EDIT: Oops, you said score, not soundtrack. I know they redid John Carpenters theme. From what I have heard it sounds eerie.

I knew there was a movie I wasn't thinking of that was worse than the cartoon Transformers movie. ;D

Never saw Devils Rejects and never plan to.

I haven't cared for anything that Zombie has done since he went solo. The reviews for this one are bad. Over at IGN, it got 0 stars...and the guy even admitted to liking the Hostel movies. ::)
I really don't care that he remade the film. Its not like any of the Halloween films after the first one were any good (go watch Halloween 3 if you need a refresher). I'm sure it will at least be mildly entertaining. If it is out on dvd by halloween I'll rent it.

The reviews are all pretty similar to one another, which is a bad sign.  If you've got diffferent reviews all picking on different parts of the movie, then there's usually a chance you'll find something moderately likable in the movie.

Reviewer's chief complaints:

-Total removal of suspense from the "gore"
-Mysogynistic killings (guys are killed quickly, the girls are tortured over a longer period, while naked, after having sex)
-Unnecessary backstory (Michael is Evil, that's all there is to it, there should be no reason for you to sympathize with him or understand why he does what he does)
-More "Friday the 13th" than "Halloween"

This is pretty much across the board, from those who loved or hated  Zombie's other work, and those who loved or hated the original.  I think it'll do decent enough box office, just from the curiousity standpoint, but I don't think it's got enough to become a classic remake in the way that Dawn of the Dead or Texas Chainsaw Massacre did.
If no one feeds the trolls, we're just going to keep eating your goats.

Why is it implausible that the guy would treat women differently than men?  Men are a physical threat... and maybe he is intrigued by women.

I think I'll wait for the dvd.  While I don't always agree with the reviews, a 21% on rottentomatoes is not a good sign.

I'm actually going to go see a sneak preview of the remake of 3:10 to Yuma this weekend, which looks really good.  I watched the original on the western channel last night (which was a very good movie), so I'm interested to see if the remake focuses as much on suspense and not on action as the original does.

For those who don't know about the movie, it stars Christian Bale and Russell Crowe and has the same writer/director/producer team that did Walk the Line.

That one is supposed to be good. It's supposed to be an early favorite for Oscar season.

I've watched 1000 Corpses two or three times now. It's the sort of movie I can't help but watch, kind of like looking at a car wreck.  The movie has EVERY imaginable horror movie cliche, and I can't help but think MAYBE, just MAYBE, Rob intended it to be a parody. And I think that's why I like it (but willingly admit, it IS a bad movie).  However, chances are he never intended it to be a parody at all. Maybe he thought cramming every cliche in there would make it the mother of all horror movies......
NO MORE!!

A friend of mine is a big fan of all the original Halloween movies. He was all hyped up to see this new movie and went to see it today. When he got out of the movie, he called me to tell me it was the WORST movie he'd ever seen. He absolutely hated it and said it sucked real bad.

Though I plan to check it out early tomorrow, extremely well said Chad! Bravo !!

They go to the "Myers Theme" for lack of a better term, far too early in the film.  The first time you hear that DUN.  DUNDUN.  DUN.  DUNDUN.  Is when he's going to kill his sister - but he's a damn kid in the Myers mask.  Almost made me LOL.   :(

Quite a letdown, this film is.  :(
