I have a Nintendo VS Unisystem I'm trying to figure out what to do with. It's in great shape with NOS art and is in good shape. I HATE the fact my VS board doesnt save highscores. What should I do with this cabinet?

Leave it as a VS. Unisystem and buy other boards to drop in.  Deal with the fact it doesn't save high scores.

D2K is coming out very soon!  Convert it to a Donkey Kong and when the D2K upgrade becomes available purchase that!  Also paint the cabinet blue and buy all necessary artwork.
2 (12.5%)
MAME it but go with a theme.  Drop every VS game made in to it...perhaps even add other Nintendo games like Super Mario Bros, Popeye, etc...come up with a custom front end, etc.  Then high scores would be saved AND all the VS games would be available.
8 (50%)
Drop a 1000-in-1 in...it has 20 or so VS titles,  plenty!  It's much cheaper than going MAME...about the price of an ArcadeVGA/JPac combo.

What To Do With VS. Unisystem Cabinet
« on: August 28, 2007, 02:35:26 pm »
Alright...the poll above says it all.  I am,  right now,  leaning toward leaving it as a VS Unisystem and picking up a couple additional VS boards.  I wish the damn highscores would save...but oh well.

That said,  a Nintendo VS themed MAME rig would rock...with every VS game + custom front end and even some of the non VS horizontal games...

I am also tore because I REALLY want Donkey Kong 2 when it comes out...and a dedicated Donkey Kong 2 uses a dark blue cabinet... but this is the most expensive route when you consider the price for artwork, etc.  I'd need a new bezel, control panel, side art plus painting it...in addition to the price of the board + harness.

I have a 1000-in-1 that I planned on dropping in the primal rage.  It has about 20 or so VS titles on it... hmmmm.....

Pretty much any computer will run those as long as you use an old mame copy. Use mame .054 or less and some old beater pII.

You don't need an AVGA or a Jpac. Nintendo isn't Jpac anyways - just get one of those economy $20 encoders that the major parts guys have now. Get Fraggals bootcd and learn to mess with dosmame. You may end up needing a video signal booster (which is on-board of the j-pac, but you can buy separately) - I don't know for sure on the Sanyo 20EZ in nintendo cabs.

So, you can technically MAME a cab for less than $100 on quite a regular basis. Once you perfect your bootcd by manipulating the dosmame monitor configs, you can do the job in next to no time.

Does anyone know if the Nintendo "gun" is compatible with MAME and if so what hardware would I use as an interface?

No, its not.

Are there any guns that would work with the VS roms in MAME?

You are better off just dropping the gun games anyways due to the monitor being laid back and vertical glass being at the bezel. It's just not feasible.

I would recommend you ditch the primal rage gear and turn that dynamo into a badass gun cabinet.

You are right about the angle and glass....and I already thought about the PR being the gun cabinet...  so many choices...so man options.

I think I am swaying back towards just using the 1000 in 1...I counted em and there are 14 vs games on the 1000 in 1.   In MAME I could more than double that but some of em are shooters.

I'm tellin ya, with the way you have been buying cabinets like they are going out of style, it is very much in your best interests to mess with advmame and fraggals boot cd.

His is not setup for an arcade monitor, but it could be if you got into the nitty gritty.

Leave it as it is!

I have a soft spot for the Nintendo stuff, so I'm a bit biased. But for these multi boards, I'd much rather see some crappy generic cab given the hack treatment.

If you get right down to it,  the cabinets already been hacked to turn it in to a VS cabinet.

I vote for option three.  I am currently in the process of a similar project.  I have a converted Popeye that does not work.  So I plan to MAME it and put on Nintendo vertical games, maybe a couple popular non Nintendo games as well, but I want to keep the number of games low.

will you be keeping a journal on this project?  I would like to see your work on this one.

As for gun games in MAME, try the Act Labs USB Lightgun.

Turn it into a D2k.. I was in the process of restoring a cab I have back to a DK, but now that they have announced D2K, I am waiting for the kits to be released so my project is on hold.

I want to be the first one in Utah with a fully converted D2K. You can be the first in Idaho.   ;D
