This is weird... I had my MAME computer set up on the dining room table to get everything configured properly.  We were having company so I unplugged everything and moved it to the basement.  When I fire up the computer now the monitor (a standard Dell LCD connected via DVI/VGA adapter) doesn't display anything other than "move mouse or hit any button on keyboard to get out of power save mode."  Obviously, doing this doesn't work.

I had the computer set to boot straight to MaLa and I am using a video card with DVI out (hence the DVI/VGA converter).  Everything was working properly upstairs (including several reboots) but now it isn't.

Any thoughts?

Try the monitor on another computer.  If you still have issues, you have a monitor problem.

he exact same thing happened to my wifes computer

and it was actually that her video card was FRIED.

she also has a dell screen
the way this ''power saving mode'' is named is misleading

try to swap the video card and see

Thanks guys... I'll give it a try on my other computer and then remove the video card.  The computer and monitor are all brand new (including the video card) so I'll be disappointed if something is wrong.  It was working perfectly before I brought it downstairs.

OK, after looking into this further it is a monitor problem.  Apparently when you hook up a Dell LCD to to a video card with DVI it borks the monitor.  I can't believe this - I paid $200 for this monitor and just hooking it up to a DVI connection ruins it - no warning or anything.  I don't know what to do other than complain to Dell but they can't seem to even find my order in their system.

Does the monitor have a DVI connector, or did you use some kind of adaptor?

I used an adapter.  I took out my video card and reinstalled it and now it seems to be working.  What's weird is that it wasn't working at all with my laptop.  It would say something like "no signal" when the monitor was powered on (green light) but as soon as I'd plug the VGA cable in it would go into power save mode (amber light).  I guess I'll just hope it continues to work once I get it installed in my cabinet... it's all I can really do I guess.  I can't believe what a widespread problem it is for Dell.
