visual pinball with howards wrapper anyone get it to work?
« on: April 28, 2003, 07:04:42 pm »
I'v tried for days now to get the vp wrapper setup so it will launch the tables from the commaznd line. I first put vp-launch2.exe in with the tables. then ran crc checker for whatever reason not sure exactly what that does. then when i type in for example
 vp-launch2.exe table.vpb

it loads up then all it loads is a blank screen with the vpinmame box running ok? any ideas why it's loading the vpinmame part but no tables?

it probably also loaded the table but did not get proper focus...try alt-tabbing through the windows...

i also get this when i launch it directly but it works from me when run from the fe.

Under win xp be sure to not put the tables and wrapper in folders with long filenames using the older version of pinmame as it does not like long filenames.

And which os are you using.. as there are a couple of different versions of the wrapper available. some work better with 9x otheres with nt based os's.

I'm using windows xp and your right it does load table but behind the vpinmame window. Hmmm is there a better way to get this going? i alt tab and it works fine when i use command line but right when i use front end it loads and kinda freezes with vpinmame window on top which sucks.. Any ideas???

yes use short pathnames to the folder the wrapper is located in. not needed for the tables names itself the can be long names. so c:\pinball\visual~1\tables\ in stead of c:\pinball\visual pinball\tables\
so you don't have to change the name of your folder...just the pathname in the fe you are using to the location of the wrapper...

put the wrapper in the tables directory and don't send any path names.  Much simplier.  Btw this is most likely a focus issue as peter suggested.

depends on what OS you are running. I think if you use XP you can change the properties of the exe to run in NT mode (or whatever it's called).  check out www.vpforums.com for more details

in your opinion why does vpinmame load on top of the tables?

Are you using the latest version of pinmame?  (Notice where it says suitable for pinmame 1.20 beta)  If so why?  The latest vp wrapper is experimental and only for the latest version of pinmame.  The latest verison of pinmame is total crap imho and it only runs properly on a few systems.  That is your problem, not the wrapper.

I had it working with PinMAME tables, but not regular VP tables.  I ended up using the AutoIt script from GameLauncher with Lazarus and it works just fine.

I thought the focus problem was with VP loading the table in the background of the editor, so you have to click it to actually play the game. Could it be possible that this IS happening but you can't see it? I guess I misunderstood the problem.

It is a auto focus problem because when i go to the command line and type
vp-launch e.vpt

it loads the pinmame on top so it shows black screen with the little pinmame textbox. then if i hit alt tab twice it focuses the vp table on top and everything works ok. So if there was a way to add alt+tab keystroke twice i'd be set.Because whats happening is game launcher loads iyt just like command line but then vpinmame is on top and in game launcher it won't let you hit alt tab.....  any ideas i'm sorry i'm hell bet on getting my pinball table running in my front end it's such a pain otherwise if swomeone can find the magic asnswer i'd ber very gratefull..............

p.s i tried right clicking and changing compatibility to windows nt 4.0 thingy did not help load table on top of vpinmame

tyweed read my response above.... it is CRUCIAL that you match up the right version of my wrapper with the right version of pinmame

I've never had a single complaint about it not working so it's something on your end.  :)

Get the latest non windows core of vpinmame and install it.

Then use vpwrapper number 2 which is the same as #3 but for the non windows core. :)

may i ask what you mean by non windows core. for example is mame a non windows core and mame32 is a windows core? both are for windows but one is a gui the other is not.
