Looking for a processor
« on: August 18, 2007, 08:17:26 am »
I was looking for a processor to upgrade my socket 754 AMD 64 3200+ @ 2.2GHZ and could not find anything too much faster. All i was able to come up with was a processor @2.4GHZ and double my FSB speed from my 512 to 1mb.
I was looking to get up to 3.0GHZ with a FSB of 1mb or higher but i cannot seem to find a socket 754 processor that fast. Does one exist and i just cannot seem to find it at that speed, or not?

Socket 754 has been discontinued for a while.  I don't know exactly what the highest speed is for it, but I'm almost positive you won't find anything near 3.0ghz.  I seem to recall the 3600+ or similar being the end of the line for 754.

Unfortunately, you're going to need a new motherboard if you want a better processor at this point.
first off your and idiot

Thanks for the response, i guess my searching skills were not bad and that it is not possible to find a processor with the speed I'm looking for with the MOBO i have.

On a side note. I think the socket 754 was so much better than any other for it's time. My processor is rated at 2.2ghz and named at 3200+ but other sockets were as high as 3700+ and only at 2.4 ghz.(only 200mhz faster but with a much higher 3700+ name) I know the fsb was double on some but it does seem like the 754 was rated alot higher in running speed.

You can get an A64 4000, rated at 2.6GHz.  It's a mobile chip, but from what I've read (can't verify myself) it works in desktop MB's.  I think it's going to be hard to find one and the price is probably going to be higher than just buying a new setup.
