Website hosting??
« on: August 16, 2007, 05:56:24 pm »
Does anyone have any suggestions on who to use for web hosting. The wifey is starting up a site for selling her photography work, and ask me to find out all I can. We have no web design skills and her domain has been purchased.

Thanks in advance guys

Have you tried a place like this to share and sell your photos? We are thinking about it ourselves..

I use http://www.futurequest.net

Great service and I've never noticed any downtime in the last 3 years.

Yea, I think Tater is asking for plain hosting for his domain, which is great. The link that Boykster and I gave above are websites that cater to professional photographers interested in selling, copyrighting pictures one at a time, on a user based platform.

To someone getting serious into the selling of photgraphy, you probably want both a free standing website with top level domain showcasing your skills with galleries and of course all of your contact information, etc, etc. All of these other "add your photo" websites are just a bonus to get your name out and maybe sell a pic here and there. BTW: Boykster, your friend has some amazing shots on that website!  :o

Good luck Tater!

my bad..I thought you were looking for a specific photo hosting / printing site that will host the pics and hten handle the printing/distro of the pics - like what Donkey Kong said....

As for hosting, there are zillions of options, but look for one that will allow you to setup gallery or some other photo hosting package as part of their built in software.

DK, he does have some pretty amazing shots, doesn't he.  He left biotech about 2 years ago to pursue photography as a possible profession...hes gotten several professional shoots as well some shots in a couple of magazines.....I'll let him know you like his shots  :D

I've always liked 'dreamhost.com'..  And they sometimes run pretty good intro deals (I got my first year for the price of one month...)

Most anybody has shared hosting plans. What you will have to guestimate is the amount of space you need, the traffic you expect to see, and the feature set you require (e.g. need mysql database, need managed hosting, etc). As you indicated, you have no hosting or design skills. So, are you going to learn it, or are you going to pay someone? That answer has a huge impact on the decision.

If you just want to learn about hosting centers, the best place is Webhostingtalk.

Just for reference, we use 1&1 dedicated root server hosting for the past few years. Been happy so far.

I use bluehost (http://bluehost.com) for my blog (http://stupidgamer.com) and they're great. Under $100 for the year and I've never had any hiccups.

You should check out http://www.pickpic.com/.  They aren't a web host, but they work with a web host and have a shopping cart/ecommerce solution thingy specifically for photographers.  I have never used it personally, so I can't say whether it's good, I just know someone who used (they didn't have any technical experience and it seemed easy enough for them).

I can host you for $8/month or $88/yr, but building your site, installing a "web store", etc is all up to you. The only support I can offer is creating email accounts, FTP, and basic troubleshooting.

I have been happy with Powweb  - http://powweb.com

Price is right, has been reliable and includes an easy installer for web content apps such as wordpress, coppermine etc. They also haven't complained about some directories of downloads and mp3s that I have up. Other companies shut down sites for content like that.

The only things that have gone wrong with our host have been caused by one of the administrators. Hint - I'm not talking about SirWoogie, and there's only two of us :)

I'd like to recommend hostgator.  I've had very little downtime and the staff seem competent.  It comes with a bunch of fantastico scripts for stores and picture display.  I'd recommend zencart.  Good luck with the search :)
