Need help attaching VGA cable to my arcade monitor
« on: August 14, 2007, 11:18:13 pm »
I'm sure I'll be asked to get more info, but here's what I have so far.

I have a cabinet with a 25" WG monitor (originally a Hit The Ice cabinet that was converted to NBA Jam).  I'm trying to wire up a VGA cable to eventually connect to an ArcadeVGA board.

The video connection for the monitor is 2 connectors, the first has red, green, and brown wires along with a braided ground cabme.  The second connector has a single white wire.

So I'm thinking that the brown wire is actually the blue channel.  And the white wire is the sync.  I've tried hooking it up this way but I get nothing.  Actually the computer says that there is no monitor attached (I'm using the 2nd monitor port on a nvidia card).

Any advice?  Do I need to send some pictures?

Thanks!

OK, so I did some more searching (Google) and it looks like I'm going to need to connect more wires to the monitor board.  There are hsync and vsync connections there, but the harness that is connected doesn't have any pins there.

PC video cards may have trouble detecting some arcade monitors.  The monitor detection works by either using the DDC lines (which won't be hooked up on an arcade monitor) or by checking for 75 ohm termination.  Many arcade monitors are terminated in a higher impedance, seems to be around 300-1kohm on average.  This may not be enough for the monitor detection to succeed.

There's usually a way to force it to enable the video anyway.  Be aware that you MUST send a standard res signal to a standard res monitor: VGA (progressive scan at 31kHz) can cause damage.

Many PC cards do support composite sync.  It will be output on the horizontal line with the vertical line being unused or carrying valid vertical sync.  You will have to configure this in the driver; this will vary by manufacturer and driver version on Windows.  It would probably be easier to just hook up separate sync.  The standard WG video pinout has horizontal/composite and vertical on that smaller connector.  Check your manual for the correct sync polarities and be sure your video card is set to those as it is usually configurable (PC monitors tend to be forgiving and accept either).

Thanks for the info.  Can I buy a new wiring harness(s) for that monitor?  Or will I need to modify the ones that are already there to accept the extra connections?

Edit: I looked at the monitor, it is a WG 25k7197.

the one i got from ultimarc for my wg k7000 monitor appears to be a perfect match, though i haven't confirmed it by testing (still waiting on a few parts, :( ) its sold as a vga breakout cable and comes with the connector and everything already setup.

I ordered my ArcadeVGA and the breakout cable last week.  I heard that it fits the k7000 directly, good to hear a confirmation.  I'll probably have mine hooked up with an hour of the mailman dropping it off, and I'll post my results here.
