how do i boot straight into DOS before Windows 98
« on: August 09, 2007, 11:08:39 am »
hey

i had a little fiddle and managed to get arcadeos to boot before windows BUT the windows 98 loading screen apears first.

i set it to bootGUI=0 and logo=0 in some .sys file so what have i missed out ???

and im using a onboard sound device which in windows can emulator a soundblaster,, how do i load the drivers in dos on the .bat file?? i also have a soundblaster live in the garage, is it worth dusting it off and installing that??

thanks

you need to edit the file "c:\MSDOS.SYS". go to command prompt, then type:

Code: [Select]
c:
cd\
attrib -s -r -h msdos.sys
edit msdos.sys
attrib +s +r +h msdos.sys

what it does is it sets you to the root of drive C: where msdos.sys exists. then it removes write protect from the file, then you edit the file, SAVE IT, then write protects it again. the file should look like this:

Code: [Select]
;SYS
[Paths]
WinDir=C:\WIN9X
WinBootDir=C:\WIN9X
HostWinBootDrv=C

[Options]
AutoScan=1
BootGUI=0
BootDelay=0
BootMulti=1
DisableLog=1
DoubleBuffer=0
Logo=0
WinVer=4.10.2222

;
;The following lines are required for compatibility with other programs.
;Do not remove them (MSDOS.SYS needs to be >1024 bytes).

if just the loading screen appears, delete the c:\LOGO.SYS file.
if windows still loads, then delete the line containing "WIN" in your AUTOEXEC.BAT.

post here your mobo and sb models and maybe we can help further. heck, post here your pc specs, os, fe, mame versions.

i use an ac97 onboard sound by via for dos games and it works great. if yours have no dos drivers then install your sb card. i would recommend ESS cards however, as it only needs the BLASTER environment in the autoexec.bat.
