MaLA UltraStik Plugin (FatFingers) SOLVED
« on: August 07, 2007, 01:56:37 pm »
I am trying to get fatfinger's plugin working. In his directions he says you have to edit your path enviroment variable for the UltrMap software. I know what a path is but I do not know where he is talking about as far as what to edit? Is it the config.sys or autoexec.bat (I doubt it :)  I cannot find anywhere else to edit a path variable though. I tried the MaLa .ini but I dont think that is it either. I ask because I have the plugin installed but it does not show up in MaLa as a plugin.

Thx

Do you guys even need this anymore? Since Mame 117u2 I believe they have instituted a mapping system similar to Andy's. So, you should just be able to leave it in analog mode, and let Mame take over?

If I am not mistaken, mame isn't going to adjust the maps for you.  You will need to create inis for all the games indicating which map to use.  Probably wouldn't be tough for someone to create a proggy to do this.

Fatfingers plug-in rocks.   ;)

I don't think my PIII is going to be running MAME releases beyond v102 anytime soon.

Ok, I went into my computer, properties, advanced, enviroment variables and edited the path with the path to my UltrMap software directory
c:\program files\ultramap
That did not work. When I right click in MaLA and goto Event plugins there is nothing listed.
Is there a step I am missing? I followed FatFingers directions to the Tee.

Thx
Mark

Yeah, well, fatfinger's directions suck.

(email me at my contact email and we can discuss what went wrong)

You are mistaken. ;)  Mame has an auto setting which automatically swaps out the hardcoded maps in mame.  Of course you can set them manually as well.

Howard, I'm probably just looking in the wrong places, but I cannot find an option where Mame automatically sets the correct map for every game (Qbert as an example).  I see where they added an option -joystick_map to load a specific map, but cannot find the automatic part.  Can you point me to this bit of documentation?  I have looked in the following:

http://mamedev.org/releases/whatsnew_0118.txt

And also in the whatsnew.txt for the last few releases, here:

http://mamedev.org/oldrel.html

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

EDIT:
I did find this post that alludes to it, but cannot find where this stuff is documented:
http://www.mameworld.info/ubbthreads/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Number=120271&page=0&view=expanded&sb=5&o=&fpart=1&vc=1

Perhaps there's not an "Auto Setting", but maps are automatically applied unless you use -joystick_map to override the default?

EDIT #2:
Maybe I should have done a better job searching before posting.  Finally found this:

-joystick_map <map> / -joymap <map>

Controls how joystick values map to digital joystick controls. MAME
accepts all joystick input from the system as analog data. For true
analog joysticks, this needs to be mapped down to the usual 4-way or
8-way digital joystick values. To do this, MAME divides the analog
range into a 9x9 grid. It then takes the joystick axis position (for
X and Y axes only), maps it to this grid, and then looks up a
translation from a joystick map. This parameter allows you to specify
the map. The default is 'auto', which means that a standard 8-way,
4-way, or 4-way diagonal map is selected automatically based on the
input port configuration of the current game.

Maps are defined as a string of numbers and characters. Since the grid
is 9x9, there are a total of 81 characters necessary to define a
complete map. Below is an example map for an 8-way joystick:

777888999    Note that the numeric digits correspond to the keys
      777888999    on a numeric keypad. So '7' maps to up+left, '4' maps
777888999    to left, '5' maps to neutral, etc. In addition to the
444555666    numeric values, you can specify the character 's',
444555666    which means "sticky". In this case, the value of the
444555666    map is the same as it was the last time a non-sticky
      111222333    value was read.
      111222333
      111222333

To specify the map for this parameter, you can specify a string of
rows separated by a '.' (which indicates the end of a row), like so:

       777888999.777888999.777888999.444555666.444555666.444555666.
       111222333.111222333.111222333

However, this can be reduced using several shorthands supported by the
<map> parameter. If information about a row is missing, then it is
assumed that any missing data in columns 5-9 are left/right symmetric
with data in columns 0-4; and any missing data in colums 0-4 is
assumed to be copies of the previous data. The same logic applies to
missing rows, except that up/down symmetry is assumed.

By using these shorthands, the 81 character map can be simply
specified by this 11 character string: 7778...4445

Looking at the first row, 7778 is only 4 characters long. The 5th
entry can't use symmetry, so it is assumed to be equal to the previous
character '8'. The 6th character is left/right symmetric with the 4th
character, giving an '8'. The 7th character is left/right symmetric
   with the 3rd character, giving a '9' (which is '7' with left/right
flipped). Eventually this gives the full 777888999 string of the row.

The second and third rows are missing, so they are assumed to be
identical to the first row. The fourth row decodes similarly to the
first row, producing 444555666. The fifth row is missing so it is
assumed to be the same as the fourth.

The remaining three rows are also missing, so they are assumed to be
the up/down mirrors of the first three rows, giving three final rows
   of 111222333.

-joystick_deadzone <value> / -joy_deadzone <value> / -jdz <value>

If you play with an analog joystick, the center can drift a little.
joystick_deadzone tells how far along an axis you must move before the
axis starts to change. This option expects a float in the range of
0.0 to 1.0. Where 0 is the center of the joystick and 1 is the outer
   limit. The default is 0.3.

-joystick_saturation <value> / joy_saturation <value> / -jsat <value>

If you play with an analog joystick, the ends can drift a little,
and may not match in the +/- directions. joystick_saturation tells how
far along an axis movement change will be accepted before it reaches
the maximum range. This option expects a float in the range of 0.0 to
1.0, where 0 is the center of the joystick and 1 is the outer limit.
   The default is 0.85.

I have yet to hook up my U360 for testing, but I think this entry in the mame.ini is it:

# CORE INPUT OPTIONS
#
joystick_map              auto

** Edit **

Thanks for the info SGT - so it looks like the plugin is really the way to go anyways - there isn't even a two way mode...

I hate to keep asking questions but after fatfingers got my plugin to show up in MLa I tested it by creating a robotron.ugc file for analog mode. I saved it to the maps directory under the plugin directory where the rest of the maps are. I then programed the two joysticks for up and down only using the UltrMap. I then went into MaLa and loaded robotron. It would only move and shoot up and down so the plugin did not load the robotron.ugc file I guess.

Am I doing something wrong? Missing a step? The plugin shows up in MaLa just fine now. I know other people are getting this to work and are raving about it. Kinda weird. But I am sure it is just me.

Thx

Any chance your map files are in the wrong directory too?  In any case, if you create the file umapper.log in the MaLa directory my plugin will write debug to that file while it is running.  Go ahead and send that file to me.

Ok you were right, the maps directory has to be in the root directory of MaLa so I fixed that. However it is still not working...........Ahhhhh

I programed the U360's to left and right only in windows and then went into RoboTron to see if it would load the analog maps to them. The first time it did not. The second time it seemed to work but for only one joystick, #1, because I could move in all directions but only fire left and right.

I made the file you spoke of and here it is:

« Reply #15 on: August 10, 2007, 01:09:06 am »
I just read through the 4 page post on the Plugin. These are the things I tried from that thread:

I installed the UltrMap software in the MaLa directory.
I associated the ugc files with UltraMap.exe
I started MaLa from the exe and not a shortcut

None of that worked. Although it seems to be programing Joystick #1 but not #2 because I set them both to 2 way up and down in windows then start MaLa and load robotron. Joy #1 works in all directions but Joy #2 only works up and down. Also when I exit and go to windows Joy #1 is now in 4-way so the exit map is loading on Joy #1 but Joy #2 is still in 2 way.

When I manually program the Joysticks in windows they work fine in Mame, so it is only doing this when I try and use the plugin.

I noticed in the original Plugin post that you said this to someone having my same problem:

"The thing I noticed is that some strings were getting chopped off due to buffer sizes so I increased the sizes."

Then you emailed him a new version I guess because it fixed his problem. Could this be my problem?

I soooo want to not ever have to worry about what mode the joy's are in. It will be awesome for my kids to not have to ask me "Daddy are the joysticks setup"  :applaud:

Thx FF for all your help!

Mark

Ok I have tried everyhting I know. I can only get the plugin to program Joy #1, it will not do anything to Joy #2. The UltrMap software does not have a problem programing #2 though so I am at a loss.

Yes the Joy's are #1 and #2.

Here are the maps you asked for that got installed when I installed the plugin:

I have 8way.ugc setup for analog because I like Robotron in Analog mode not 8 way.

I did notice that the green blinking light on Joy #1 blinks alot "harder" than the light on Joy #2. I doubt that means anything because UltraMap can program #2 fine but I thought I would mention it.

FF, anyway we can talk over the phone? I got free long distance on my land line.
This is really frustrating

I have 8way.ugc setup for analog because I like Robotron in Analog mode not 8 way.

8way.ugc
# This is an Ultimarc UltraStik Game Configuration file
UltraStikGameConfigurationFileFormatVersion=1.0

UltraStik1MapFile=Analog
UltraStik2MapFile=Analog
UltraStik3MapFile=
UltraStik4MapFile=

robotron.ugc
# This is an Ultimarc UltraStik Game Configuration file
UltraStikGameConfigurationFileFormatVersion=1.0

UltraStik1MapFile=Analog
UltraStik2MapFile=Analog
UltraStik3MapFile=
UltraStik4MapFile=

The correct way to do this (to override controls just for one game) is to create the game-specific map and leave the 8-way map as it is.  I see you have a robotron.ugc file and it is set for analog, so you should be able to set your 8-way ugc file back to 8ways.

Yeah, we should be able to work something out, however I am at work now, not sure what time I'll be home tonight and tomorrow I am out of town (at least for most of the day).

I will email my phone number.

If I am not mistaken, mame isn't going to adjust the maps for you.  You will need to create inis for all the games indicating which map to use.  Probably wouldn't be tough for someone to create a proggy to do this.

You are mistaken. ;)  Mame has an auto setting which automatically swaps out the hardcoded maps in mame.  Of course you can set them manually as well.

That's cool.  That brings me to another question; the information in mame used to be somewhat inaccurate and not as detailed as needed, hence you and sirpoonga created controls.ini .  Has the information in mame been updated?

In the original Plugin thread a guy mentioned that controls.ini needed to be installed inorder for the plugin to work. FF said he was not sure about this. I do not have this file because I cannot find a current version of it nor do I know if I can create one with mame, like an option or something.

Could this be my problem?

I do not understand why one stick is programed but the other isnt. Especially when UltraMap has no problem programing both of them.

PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME  :censored:

I'm sorry I missed you tonight -- I'll contact you again when I'm more available...

Some things you might try/send to me:

- Take a screenshot of the UltraMap screen when you are running it by hand and send it to me.

- Reassign your ID1 joystick to ID2 and vice versa and see what maps are applied to what.

Re: MaLA UltraStik Plugin (FatFingers) SOLVED

Basically UltraMap was not programming one of the Joysticks through DOS, (i.e. without UltraMap). And since the plugin programs the Joy's this way it was not working. The GUI of UltraMap worked on both Joy's though. FF found the problem.

I emailed Andy, after talking to FF over the phone, and Andy let me know that there was a new UltraMap out that fixed this problem and added some new options. I installed it and BOOM, works like a charm.

So go get the new UltraMap!

Thank You to everyone that helped me. ESPECIALLY FF and Andy from Ultimarc!
