now THESE are cars! (dial up warning)
« on: August 07, 2007, 07:41:37 am »
i went to greazefest2007 on sunday. it was a blast. hot rods, hot chicks, rockabilly music. moon discs. fox tails. frenched aerials. flame jobs. pinstripes. flathead v8s. choppers. bobbers. did i mention hot chicks? what more can a guy ask for (",) . its funny, this modern greazer culture seemed to skip the gen x crowd and gone straight to gen y. funny, because theyve reinterpreted it somewhat. heaps of 'tribal' piercings and women with more tatts then men. many of them have HUGE tatts on their chest (tatts i said). i find it a little daunting but each to their own. and at least they appreciate some fine cars...

some more pics. this would have to be my personal favourite. nothing like an a model with a side valve v8 (",) in keeping with the look everything is scavenged from where ever. the front brakes are finned buick drums for instance. and in this case Jesus really did build my hot rod!

if you look REALLy closely at the wheel in the second pic yuoll notice that it actually has a cycle guard. made by using an actual tyre as a mold to make fibreglass guards. rego rules are fairly strict in australia and to be registered you must have gaurds. but the old hot rods often didnt have them. so if you make them hard to see it has the same look to it...

you should be able to guess what car this engine is in by counting the cylinders...

i cant remember why i took this photo ;) . glad i did, because most of the people in the background of my other photos look daggy but there were HEAPS of people dressed the part. even i threw on a plain black t shirt, greased my hair and turned up the cuffs of my jeans (",)

a few mainstays...

the pontiac may look like the rear end is busted and they trailered it there but i managed to see it when they drove it home. it definitely doesnt have the original six in it! sounded very sweet. and obviously on airbags (again illegal here, but people run the risk for the shows. occasionally you could heard a police siren go off outside the grounds as people with questionable looking cars left to go home)

cant have an aussie show without a few holdens (",)

the first is basically holdens first car, the fj done up in a period racing scheme. the second i think is an fc chopped up to somewhat resemble a mercury. but about 4/5 the size. easier to park than a merc! the third is another fc with a classic roof chop. whats cool about this car is that the dude used to drive it to work every day. we'd pass each other and give each other a nod (i drive a type 3 vw. not a hotrod obviously but something out of the norm which is sorta what the rods are about). i chatted to the guy and i mentioned this and he remembered the car. i also used to give this little car in flat black with flames the nod too. turned out to be the same guy! took three windscreens to try and cut to size for this wagon and in the end they used lexan. and it looks spot on. lexan can scratch though so he normally doesnt have any wipers. again illegal here. lucky theres a drought on!

i think that will do for now ;) the dodge pick up by the way was driven to the show! about 50km. the fuel tank pressure pump (or whatever it was. no fuel pumps on these pups!) packed it in so the guy had a 4 litre plastic bottle of fuel hanging from the windscreen support! took two and half bottles to get there he told me (",)

oh, one more good thing came out of it. this girl i rather fancy who lives down the street from me was there so i went over and said hello. she introduced herself (so now i at least know her name). i mentioned a band i had just watched called Voodoo Kreepers and that i had just bought their CD. she saw the bass player nearby and said i should get them to sign it. of course i was too shy so she got the whole band to sign it for me (",). im thinking i should have got her phone number...

Looks like fun.  I went to a show similar to that one a few months ago.  The one I went to was pretty funny because they divide it into two groups, inside the fairgrounds they let in all the nicer chromed out hot rods, but they kept all of the rat rods (similar to your favorite one) in a seperate section in the parking lot.  Apparently theres been a bit of a feud between the two groups.

You mentioned a '26 dodge pickup, so you might find it interesting that my dad restored a '28 Chevy pickup.  He spent about 10 years doing it because parts were so hard to find, but its finished now and actually runs great.  He drives it around town every once in a while.  Now he's working on a 1919 race car, which will probably take him another 10 years.

Man I love rockabilly chicks and the whole nine yards.  Only second to a skinbyrd.  Definitely some nice cars, and good luck with the girl thing brother.

yeah, at this show there was no such animosity. i grew up being into the really polished shiny hotrods but nowadays i really like the whole rat rod thing. maybe because as your dad knows, it takes too long to do it that way ;)

yeah, they certainly look cool. i had to do a search on what a skinbyrd was though. i think the rockabilly chicks have nicers tatts  ;D

I'm thinking you need to turn in your man card and get out of the clubhouse because you DON'T have her phone number. She all but ripped your clothes off, whaddyawaitinfer?
