Author Topic: Computer Monitor to Arcade Monitor (Read 4017 times)

I recieved several video games for free due to the monitors not working. The games start and you can hear them play but no show. I also have access to several computer monitor. I was wondering how hard it is to swap the moitors or would I be waisting my time. Also should leave them in thier cases or try to open them and mount them like the originals. The monitors range from 13" to 25". Any info would be great.

i am afraid its not as simple as that,most arcade games use 15khz cga frequency for the monitor whereas a pc monitor will be 31khz vga so you your picture will not lock,you could get a cga to vga converter that would do the job.
you best way to go is to repair the arcade monitors

I'm pretty good at following directions and have a basic mechanical + electrical background. Where is the best place to get the basic troubleshooting info for. I could take pictures but and list monitors but there are several games to work on. I wouldn't go through the trouble, but I was given 2 galaxian, a missle command and a 40 game multi(on a board).

if these cabs are original and in good condition it would be worth your time to get repaired,you need a good understanding of electronics and some basic tv knowledge to attempt this yourself.
if decide to go ahead and repair these monitors you will probably find all the information here on this forum,it is necessary to know the exact make and model number of the monitor to find the exact information.
please do not attempt this if you do not have some electronics experience,remember there are some very nasty voltages on monitors that can hurt you very badly.

Just wanted to note that the sticker glued to the back of the glass picture tube is NOT the make/model number of the monitor.

I learned my lesson already. Don't lift the rubber cup on the side of the picture tube with your fingers. As for the bulk of the work, after reading for a couple of hours last night it looks that i may be able to try a coulpe of cap kits for the sceen with the partial distortions. There are 4 W/G 19k series, 2 W/G 25k7191 and 2 Electrohome 19" color arcade monitors. The two elecrtohome units are solid green screens. 1 W/G 25k and 2 W/G 19k are distorted screens. The rest are dead i guess. no glow in the neck of the tube. Games still start and I can here game playing.

the americans on this forum can help you further,i have worked on quite a few k7000 series but the others i have no experience on(although every monitor is basically the same)
you will find information here mapping out all the common problems that occur with these makes.
try to attempt the easier problems first like the distortion problems
you can find repair kits that do a job lot of problems from bob roberts
now i think its over to my american friends for more precise advice

Back tracking a little. Back when i asked about using a computer monitor for an arcade game. The board in the game I'm working on has a vga out put on the board. Is this compatible with a computer monitor.

If it has a VGA out then it should be fine on a pc monitor.
Just try it out and see what ya get. (if it's enabled)

I tried a small 13" computer monitor, no luck. The game im working on is a "Skins Game". The monitor in the cabinet is a W/G 25k7191. Its in a generic cabinet and running off of a single board. Picture attached.

That looks alot like a 48 in 1 multiboard in what you are refering to a skins cab. It needs the jumpers set properly to give you vga output.

I made a mistake on the cabinet. I'm working on two right now. This board is for my 40 game multi. The skins game monitor just isn't heating up at all. it blows the 2A fuse every time i power up the cabinet.

For the 40 game cabinet, is it better to go with a jumper and a free replacement monitor or try to repair the monitor in the cabinet?

If its setting the jumpers, could you point me in the direction for setting them.

Sorry about the mix up. Your right i should hold off on the multitasking for now. I'm going to concentrate on getting the multi game running. This unit has a pretty severely distorted screen but if you know what your looking at the games seem to be running fine. I herd a lot of people talking about cap repair kits. I ques I'll start with this and if that doesn't work I'll persue the monitor change out.

If you're getting a scrambled picture you may just have to adjust the sync.

Cap it..... might possibly need an IC as well.
But since it's not completely collapsed, I'd cap it first and go from there.

Ah, a K7000. Missed that with all the jumping around.

Find IC3. Test for +24V DC @ pin 6. If it's reading 0 then R91 may be open.

Replace IC2, IC3, C50.

IC3 pin 6 reading 24.9V DC. Not the greatest meter but it works.

Might sound like a stupid question, but do you recommend getting a repair kit with all the caps while i have the board out.

*shrug* it's up to you. K7000s are easy to remove, but if you want to toss caps in there while you have it out it's no big deal.

Now if this was a K4600 I'd say DEFINITELY do it, because you have to pull the whole monitor to do any work.

Thanks for the site. At $150 per converter, I think I'm going to try the cap kits on the monitor in the box first.

I put a cap kit in with no change. I put a working board from another monitor in and the picture didn't change. I then put the board with the new caps in another monitor and it worked fine. Could it be the picture tube.
