Most of the groups I have played with the past few years have had at least one female player. My group being 3 girls and 3 guys however is a bit unusual. Girls can really enjoy D&D if it is the right style of game. I run the style of game that attracts female players.
The current campaign started with everyone picking from a stack of pregenerated characters, each one of which had a backstory, motivations, people they knew, and places they liked to go. Then they get tossed onto my rather detailed island setting. And by detailed I mean it is one of those settings where every shopkeeper has a name, and a personality, and there are lots of recurring characters. They spend as much time wandering around talking to npcs (often separated) as they do adventuring.
In general the campaign is centered around the personal goals of the various characters and not around some large overriding quest.
The group consists of...
Truffle Catscratch - Halfling acrobat. He was fired from the al Mahirini (Luxury hotel) when they decided that a cat juggler would make more money for them than a trick rider. He is currently learning cat juggling and romancing the lovely Theallalee Fastheart Sheelifur (whose family owns "Pancake on a Stick"). Of course his feelings for Theallalee doesn't keep him from visiting the brothel every chance he gets.
Grim Ticktock - Dwarven tinker. The very talkative Grim leads the group. He is studying the art of clockwork mechanisms and is close to building his first clockwork robot. Grim is overly friendly, but doesn't have much of a sense of tact. He is attempting to get a marriage arranged with a dwarven girl living on another island. He can usually be found at "All you can Eat Gruel" in the mornings and at "The Ruddy Pigeon" at night.
Iuliia (Julie) - Peasant Heroine. 19 year old Julie was destined for a life of boredom as the middle child in a large business owning family who still lived at home with her parents. That was until she hit it big at the cat races and won a little money. After that she met some interesting companions and has moved out of her parent's place into a second story apartment. Julie does not have a love interest at the moment, although she is finally free to marry since her older sister got married in the last game session.
Madonna - Feyborn Druid (pretty nature type spellcaster). - Former slave from a far away land, the beautiful Madonna has sworn off material wealth and enjoys living simply with her blink dog companion Padfoot. After over a year on the streets she is finally living indoors again, although it is on Julie's couch. Madonna particularly enjoys controlling animals and doing good deeds. She is just beginning to pursue a relationship with a mysterious ship's captain.
Alexandra (Captain Lexi) - As a small child in Ruskavek a pirate captain flipped her a skull coin and told her to piss off. From that day forward she wanted to be a pirate. At the age of 18 she signed aboard a ship and eventually made her way to the pirate kingdoms in hopes of signing on with a real pirate crew. Lexi has managed to get her own small ship and is making her way in the world. She has no main romantic interest, preferring to love 'em and leave 'em.
Volkimir - (Undead Hunter) - Volkimir came from Ruskavek following rumors of a powerful vampire lord operating in the pirate kingdoms. However he hasn't been able to find much actual evidence. On the surface he is a devout follower of the Suffering Cube (think Orthodox church, a long time ago), but ends up ignoring his beliefs all the time. He was recently married to Magdalina (older sister of Julie), but started being unfaithful to her almost instantly. He has a few secrets in that he has never even seen an undead creature, much less a vampire, and is a huge fanboy of "Rainbow the Mummy Hunter", which is a series of children's books.
