why do people type in like, 'valley girl' speak?
« on: July 15, 2007, 01:03:15 am »

It's, like really, like strange to me that people would type in, like 'valley girl'. to me it's like, like a speech impediment. but people don't, like usually TYPE their speech impediments, do they?

For instance. I used to work with a guy who would say almost EVERYTHING twice. Sometimes even three times. He was a really nice guy but gee would that get on my nerves sometimes. But i'm pretty certain that if he were to write a letter, he wouldn't WRITE every sentence twice, would he? Or would he? Are there any experts here on speech impediments, especially, like 'valley girl' speak?

I haven't had much problem with the like "Valley Girl" speak.  Oh my god I have like totally had problems with most of my co-workers driving me crazy with incomplete sentences and multiple punctuation.  I am constantly barraged with:

Did you finish yet????  The GM wants to see you!!!!!!

I once sent a company wide email asking if our employer was paying bonuses for extra puncuation, and if so do exclamation points pay more than question marks?

This calmed it down for about a week.
Please!  Give me the good news first!

I've kind of noticed what you're talking about. It isn't just Valley Girl, or speech impediments. It seems like people type out their verbal crutches. I guess they don't realize that just because they say it, doesn't mean it is necessary or proper.

Yeah, cause teenage guys would never type ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- like that.  Never ever.

It's like, become like, some form of like, epidemic.

I hear it all the time and it drives me crazy. I have actually had to move into the nest train cab because I end up rereading the same paragraph over and over again due to the liguistically challenged stupidity of it all. I base its overuse on people's limited vocabulary. I once heard one female college student use it so excessively that I almost lost it. I felt like jumping up and saying "LIKE, LIKE LIKE LIKE, LIKE, LIKE LIKE LIKE, LIKE" some some quacking, hysterical, mental case. That's how much it bugged me. But hey, that's just me.

This plan is so perfect, it's retarded. -- Peter Family Guy

It's been a part of the vernacular for roughly two decades now...get over it, there's far worse things to be concerned with. If the overuse of the word "like" is a major cause for concern in your life, then you've got it pretty good.

You should try the Malysian or Singapore forums lah. Liaoh bro, use many more Singlish, can? It took me quite a while to learn to read this. Some boards expressly forbid the use of local or non grammatical sentences.

It is indeed illegal to chew gum here. Once a month I do a "gum run" over the border to buy chewing gum in Malaysia. My wife is addicted to it  8)

What possible reason would there be for outlawing chewing gum? The only possible reason I can think of would be issues with people dropping the gum on the street and making a mess, but seems a bit extreme to actually outlaw it because of that-I'd assume the penalty for it would be about the same as littering?

Things are a bit more extreme here. What I can do in Amsterdam very legally will get me executed here  :police: On the other hand, there is virtually no crime even though there are almost no police officers on the streets.

Sorry, this is hi-jacking the thread, back to topic...

thats about the size of it. lee quan yu (sorry about spelling) was probably a bit obsessive compulsive or something. the penalty is probably a public lashing. that seems to be a fav there (",)

It's almost hard to argue though with a nearly 0% crime rate.

hmmm...maybe I should start pimp smacking people walking around in public here with gum?
