OT: Video tutorials?
« on: July 14, 2007, 03:52:12 pm »
This is just an idea I was throwing around, but would it be helpful/useful to some of you if I made videos showing what some of my software can do?  I have a firewire camera and a youtube account, so in theory I could do it, but I wondered if it would actually be worth the effort ad if so how I should go about it.

I would love comments/suggestions.

Howard,

I've used some free software called Wink (http://www.debugmode.com/wink/) at work. It basically records whatever you do on screen - including moving the mouse. I've used it to demonstrate little "how-to's" and they go down very well. Admittedly they are on "how to create a signature in Outlook 2003" and the like so not sure how they would cope with software that changed resolution or whatever. Would be great for explaining how to setup the config of frontends etc as you can annotate the video with little help boxes.

Maybe not on the right tracks but I like the idea of computer based training - I think i will work very well with stuff like your wrappers whichever recording solution you go for.

Yeah that's a good idea too, thanks.  The problem with my direct-x stuff though is that it can't be recorded, you pretty much have to do it by pointing a camera at the screen.  It's not so much that it can't be done, but that the fe takes so many resources that the vid would drop frames like crazy and the fe itself would be sluggish.

But like, you said, for wrappers and stuff it would work great, and I'll give it a try.

thanks again!

No problem Howard.

You can also add audio too - so you can talk users through the options.

Sometime free software just blows me away ! But I don't need to mention that to you :)

Cheers

Absolutely Howard! I'd love to see those vids. It might help you out too in that you may not be getting so many of the same questions all the time.... :dunno
