Scavenging is Fun
« on: July 13, 2007, 01:42:39 pm »
I hit paydirt yesterday at work.
My office building has a testing lab in it and is clearing out a mezzanine.
I scrounged through the pallet box they were tossing the electronics recyclables into and pulled out an old rackmount 5mhz oscilloscope that works, and a rack mount 36volt @ 15 amp max variable powersupply.

I also grabbed some other bits and pieces for the "i like to tear things apart" pile.  I also ended up with a pair of line dryer, pressure regulator, auto oiler sets for my compressor, and a couple of solid slabs of aluminum about 1" thick and about a foot square.

The one time i actually enjoyed being in a building that does 5s audits.

I'm going to raid that box again before i go home today.

 :D

I worked at an aluminum rolling plant 2 years ago. I could have gotten all the scraps I wanted as long as I asked first. Any sheet thickness/ strength I wanted was available, and a LARGE selection of test blocks ranging from 1" to 6" thick in a variety of alloys.

I guess that would be your dream huh? ;D

My wife works at an aluminum supply warehouse in the office.  i get to go sort through the drops bin and get it at almost cost.  Free is much better but i'm not a machinist, i just like to play with tools.

Lucky punk. I work in a building where I couldn't even hope for anything like that. It's the damn bean counters that ruin it. Everything gets palletized, counted and shrink wrapped. Then it goes and sits in our storage for days, weeks, months or sometimes years before it goes off to be, "processed."

We just upgraded from nearly 200 high end P3's for some mid-upper range P4's. They've been sitting on pallets along with their CRT's and ancient LCD's for the last four months and I haven't been able to get near them.

I wandered into the "old" storage section and discovered an early 80's style cigarette pull dispenser still with packs and coinage. I've been trying to figure out how I could move it without drawing too much attention from the stinking counters.

Why would you want a cigarette machine?

I never thought someone would ask something like that on this site. My coworkers, yes...but not on this site - especially from someone with 20k + posts.  :dunno

"Why would you want an arcade machine in your house? You can get a PS3?"
"Why have  a pop machine in your basement? Are you gonna charge people?"

The simple answer is because COIN-OP stuff rules!!!

Dude, a cigarette machine would be so hard to adapt to anything a person would actually want to use.  Amusment coin op rules.  That's a freakin' cigarette vendor.

Nyeh... old soda machines, I get... don't want one but I get why others would... food vendors, maybe... but a cigarette machine is just bad juju.  Plus they have no resale/restoration market.

You could put decks of cards in it, small sandwiches, business cards, small box of crayons. The possibilities are endless.

Geez Chad - you need to use your imagination.

Sharidans right. Just imagine how sweet it would be to have these beauties:

Hellz Yeah! Coin Op Washer and Dryer Baby! Get your wife into the action

Lets imagine your in your driveway and you notice your front tire is low. Sure you could whip out the hose from the air compressor but imagine the joy you'd have putting a quarter in this:

And we all know how fun a coin-op toll booth is. They should be in every driveway...

Now explain to me why you would want to vend any of those three things in your house, especially the sandwiches, in a nonrefridgerated case.   :laugh2:

I know!  I'll stick Atari carts in it and every time you want to play you have to buy the cart.

These machines were a common fixture where I grew up. I remember, even as a little tyke with my father, looking into the glass at the colorful cigarette packages. I even remember asking my father what they were.

When I was old enough to know that a quarter was vastly superior than the lowly half-dollar, dime, nickel or penny, those cigarette machines were always there. Waiting silently by the front entrance of the arcade as I made a beeline for the Tempest cabinet.

When cigarette machines were outlawed in my state, most were shipped out of state or destroyed. My father actually got a hold of two for scrap metal and I remember gutting the machine to get at the cash box inside for those precious quarters. Then working my way to the cigs so I could see what was inside them (in retrospect, I should've sold them for arcade money, meh) . But the machine at the arcade was converted to vend candy. How it escaped the exodus is beyond me. Unfortunately, it was later destroyed in a construction mishap, the same one that damaged the Tempest machine.

Even with the constant influence of smoking, cigarettes and advertisements, not once did I ever have any desire to smoke. When it came right down to it, the addiction of feeding money into an arcade cab was far greater than lighting a couple of sticks and inhaling the smoke. But having a vending machine there, to me, just completes the kind of atmosphere I grew up in. If I can get one, I'll just buy cig sized boxes of candy and put them in.

When I was an early teen I worked at Dunkin Donuts... we had one of those in the vestibule.  That machine got picked clean every week and I don't think I ever saw anyone above the age of 16 using it.  Every kid in a 5 mile radius that wanted smokes got them from that machine.

make friends with the weekend security guard, haul it home and get his help.  :D  I would love that thing and i dont smoke.

On a secondary note there is a small movement of poeple taking old ciggarette machines rebuilding them and filling them with small art pieces that fit into ciggarette sized packages, there was a website that talked all about it but its been awhile since i saw it.  I think the closest to me was in chicago.

Before the ban. most kids never had to where I grew up. There are three schools right next to each other. Near one was a pizza place that sported an arcade/pool hall, cigarette sales and a condom vending machine (not the one I frequented). The people who worked there were typically high school drop outs and they had absolutely no bones to pick about selling cigs to anyone. It's also in the same building as a microbrewery, but oddly you couldn't buy beer at the pizzeria if you were under age ???

I remember it wasn't until the vending ban that the place started to sink. The school district kept pressuring the pizzeria to get rid of the cigs. Then they were forced to remove the condom machine. Then the arcade. Then the pool hall and that's when the owners finally decided to sell it off. Now it's a crappy Italian restaurant with bad food and nothing interesting.

It isn't actually such a horrible idea. It wasn't until the last 20 years or so that cigarettes were considered "bad for you" or carried such a negative perspective, so... the stigma is in the eye of the beholder. Coin-op or not, retro is the thing a lot of people are after. When you look at this one on eBay from the 40's, it makes a bit more sense why someone would want one.

That is a cool looking machine.  I really like that the top half is a mirror so that you can check out your premature wrinkles and yellowing teeth as you buy your next pack of smokes.  And before any "Pro-Cigarette" people hack their opinion on me, I smoked for 8 years and still don't mind the occasional "social smoke" but you have to admit that stuff wreaks havoc on your body.

It does seem like a cool candy dispenser to me.
