console catvers?
« on: April 23, 2003, 09:10:54 pm »
I hate to ask, but i've spent the better part of the day looking for catver files for different consoles (snes, genesis, gba, nes, etc...).  I'm finally trying to integrate all of my emulators into lazarus, but im in the need of catver files, unless im mistaken and i dont even need them for lazarus.  ?
howard - the documentation says that
Quote
Catvers for other emus can be found at the Lazarus homepage
but i dont see where. am i blind?
can anybody please help me out?  thanks

Catvers for other ARCADE emus can be found on the lazarus homepage.  :)  Consoles have no standardization and thus it would be next to impossible to make catvers for them.

Sorry. :(

blast.  oh well..... :D

and it really shouldnt make any difference what platform its on - catvers could be used.  all they pretty much do is distinguish what TYPE of game it is anyways.  a platformer is a platformer, a shooter is a shooter.

I think what Howard is saying is that there are no standard romnames, making it difficult to make standard catvers.

You could always make your own, although I personally could not be bothered  ;D

I would say the Goodxxx Dats are a pretty good standard to use.. i guess with the options for renaming files might make it difficult, just stick with one way of naming files.. I would rename all my roms if someone did a catver for all the consoles!

There is only one real option on this......

Cbonsole rom images contain their true name in the header of the rom image itself.  With a console developer's help, a person could Take the original name, remove and spaces or special characters, take the first 6 letters from the beginning of the title and the last two from the end.  (Similar to how good files does it.)  If this tool was readily available then before someone went to the trouble of making snaps, catvers, ect, this tool could be ran and then they would be universalized.

Also needed would be a dat maker that saves both the real name of the game and the name of the rom, using the same techniques of course.

i agree...no universal standard but covers most games...but neither are mame names, they are also just arbitrary rom names...

but someone has to make the catvers...the easy part...and rename all artwork accordingly and make them available...the difficult part... :D
