Frontends and emulators better on xbox?
« on: July 10, 2007, 06:26:48 pm »
I've been a long time xbox modder.  I've been slowly working on a cabinet, and have more experience with xbox front-ends and emulators.  The thing I notice though is that xbox frontends/dashboards and emulators seem way more advanced than what I see for pc.  This suprises me, considering the emulation scene for the pc is so much older and I would think there are more people into it.

Every frontend I look at for the pc seems ancient.  There are xbox dashboards that are fully 3d, and are so much more eye-catching.

Emulators for xbox are designed for full screen use, and are in most cases a lot nicer.  Am I just unable to find the nicer GUIs for the pc?  The U64 emulator for xbox is nice and full screen...

Here are some vids I found on youtube.  They don't give the dashboards justice, but you get an idea of what is out there.  Can anyone suggest something I would like?  It almost seems worth it to try to get a dashboard running off an xbox emulator to launch pc apps.  Are xbox modders just way more enthusiastic about emulation?  Are there any front ends out there for pc that would wow me?

Guess I'm more old-school.  I want the front end to look "arcade like."  I don't want it making Pac Man graphics look bad. ;D

I think its just a different generation.  I like the older look cause I stopped playing newer games around mortal kombat.  the younger generation will like these more.

edit.....I'm 34

Well I'm 32, and I like a nice looking front-end.  I have Chankast and Zinc running, which don't clash too much with a nice 3d menu system.  So I'm guessing there isnt anything out there on the pc front?

Nope there's plenty, you just aren't looking.

3dArcade, Mala, Dragon King, ect... they all have virtually limitless skinning options.

IMHO the console "skins" are incredibly ugly and uninspiring.  Text list on the left, screenshot in the upper right, jpeg background, and that's it.  Of course I and describing the skins for the front-ends themselves, NOT the m$ dashboard replacements, which have absolutely nothing to do with the emulators on the xbox.  I think you are confusing the two, because without snapshots and proper game names (which aren't available in the dashes) you need to actually run the emulators gui to see what you are going, and they are quite ugly.  :)
