Xbox Phillips DVD pot adjustment....I DID IT!
« on: July 08, 2007, 11:47:05 am »
I have an xbox that has a Phillips dvd drive in it and it wouldn't read ANY media I burned. I read about adjusting the pot on it and I figured, why not try it. Before the adjustment, it read 863 ohms and I tried to move it. It wouldn't move at first then it just let loose. I checked again and it was at ~300. Online it says not to go below 500. OOPS! So I turned it back some and got it to a reading of 528. I put it all back together and it reads dvd+r and dvd-r now. I tried a cd-r but it didn't read that. I guess most drives won't though so I am not concerned about that. I haven't tried a cd-rw yet but I am happy with the dvd readings.

Anyway...I just thought I would mention it here in case anyone has a drive that won't read burned media. It isn't as hard as it looks. Fairly easy in fact. I am probably going to try it again on my Thompson drive. That one doesn't read crap either. But it looks like that one is harder to adjust. We will find out I guess. :)

thomsons are the easiest of them all undo the ribbon and undo the laser rail side that the laser arm loops around the pole and then it comes right out drop it at 100ohm increments the lower you go and it is over kill the faster you kill the laser strengh all in all so only use what you need at a time.

Mine seems to read blank discs better than originals... any commerical dvd movie I put in eventually has problems, no matter how flawless the disc looks.  Doesn't have an issue with games.
