Ultimarc Console Adapter for dreamcast and PS2 HELP!!
« on: July 05, 2007, 10:29:00 am »
First of all, I have contacted Andy, but I am also desperate, so if anyone can help, I would greatly appreciate it.

I have both a Dreamcast and PS2 Ultimarc console adapters.

Of course as many of you know, these are so pricy and to have problems...it makes me absolutely crazy!

The problem is this.   When I play with either adapter player 2 stops working.   It freezes into a certain direction or button push and just simply will not come out of the loop.

Here is the testing I have done.

The Dreamcast connector goes from the ipac to the ultimarc adapter to the ps2 to dreamcast adapter to the dreamcast.

First I have never had problems with the IPAC to the computer, so its not the ipac.

Then I tried PS2 controllers into the PS2 to Dreamcast adapters.  That worked fine, so its not those.

Then I tried a keyboard to the ultimarc adapter.   That worked fine as well.

So I tried switching player one and player two.    Player one becomes the problem.    So I figured it was just that side.    Yet the same thing happens on both systems.

So whatever keyboard presses are going to player two, that is the problem.

What galls me, is that the keyboard works, so that means it is probably not the adapter.   But then the IPAC works so it must be the arcade buttons...but there is one thing.

IF it was the arcade buttons, then why would they work at all?    It seems to happen during one amount of time.   3rd quarter with NBA Showtime, 3 round with MK Armageddon, 3rd round with Marvel VS Capcom 2...etc.

In other words, it takes a fair bit of time for this to happen.

If you need more information to help, feel free to ask me.    I have tried just about everthing that I can think of, and I cannot understand why this is happening.

I will of course try to help with this via email.
In the meantime as this seems to be a strange issue, I would like to request that anyone else who has seen this problem post here as I would like to know if its an inherent issue or a one-off.
The only issue I am aware of with the PSX adaptors was early versions (2005) came up intermittently with "controller disconnected" flashing up momentarily, which was cured by a microcode change in the chips.

Don't feel bad I have the same issues with the X Arcade PSX converter.

Same issues as you on both the Original PSX and the PS1 and PS2.  Everything else works, DC, XBOX, GC and PC but not the PSX and its the second converter.

I'm thinking it might be a voltage or signal issue with the PSX.

Meaning there could be nothing wrong with Andy's Interfaces or the X-Arcade.  ;D
If I had only one wish, it would be for three more wishes.

Well I found out that it wasn't my game console adapter.   So now it is looking like a mechanical probelm...and having some kind of "sticking" key.

I must say that Andy was a tremendous help.     The problem isn't solved yet, but thankfully it isn't the console adapters.

I will report back, but I have to say Player One works like a charm.    I must have grounding problem or something like that.   I recently rewired so anything is possible.

Glad to see that someone else had some weird crap.   Still most of the time it is mechanical/electrical.      The IPAC is nice, but having strictly USB just may be the better future!

Still, I can see how "analog" mode can be good too for operating in safe mode.   I think both should be made readily available through some kind of Y-adapter right out of the box.
