running mame from dos prompt on winxp
« on: June 20, 2007, 08:39:17 pm »
I'm trying to set up dos to start running mame when i open it from windows xp. I know it can be done on the older windows versions through the dosstart.bat file. I can't seem to figure it out for xp. Can any one help with this.

Thanks,
Kenny

Why not just run a MAME batch file instead of running a DOS prompt and then auto-starting MAME?  ???
You can't 'Shut down to DOS prompt' in XP like in win95/98 if that's what you are talking about.
It might help if you describe what exactly you are trying to accomplish.

I want to run mame in a dos only system. I want mame to start up as soon as you turn on the computer, but before I put it in a spare computer that I have, I want to make sure I can get it to work.

The only way you can do that is to dual boot your system or make a bootable floppy disc or cdrom with dos (and mame, roms ect..) on it.  You cannot run dos within xp because xp doesn't have a dos mode.

Your first post requests something totally different from your second post. Which do you want?

Taskmagee, WinXP is fundamentally different from Win95/98. The earlier OSes were a graphical interface built on top of a DOS platform. It can be argued that Win95/98 aren't even OSes but very fancy applications that run in DOS.

WindowsXP is an actual OS and is not DOS based. Microsoft threw in a DOS emulator which you can run to start up command line programs, but because it doesn't run on DOS, there is no way to get a "DOS-only" version of XP, or boot to DOS etc. XP is simply not built that way.

If you want / need to run pure DOS, boot into DOS etc, you need to go back to Win98.

If you only want to run pure DOS why not just install DOS instead of win98.

If he can find DOS. 98 is easier to get your hands on. But, agreed...
