Author Topic: Megalo 50" monitor help (Read 3392 times)

I just bought this VF3 cabinet and the monitor does not work. I dont know anything about them, but came here hoping for some answers. The monitor power also powers to the board. The board for sure works, as i can hear the game, and blindly choose characters, but the monitor does not work. When the Mainpower button is pressed, the light next to it goes Green then Red fast. I hear the sound of the monitor trying to turn on, but nothing. Are there fuses in this monitor that usually burn out, or do the bulbs generally need replacing? I have scanned throughout the monitor guts, and see no cracks anywhere, but the bulbs themselves do seem dark/smoky, and there is a dried grey silicon on them.

Since the cab is a rear projection 3 gun type you would not expect all the colors to go out at once due to the tubes. More likely the power supply is having a problem if the light going from green to red is any indication. Do you have any info on the display unit itself? Model number and manufacturer?

I am trying to get more info, but its hard to get it. I am unsure about the power. I do know that the power for the monitor also powers the board and speakers. The board and speakers boot fine and I can play the game blind...so I am unsure if that means the power is fine.

i have worked on quite a few mitsubishi and toshiba rptv's,what bob said about the power led is a good indicator to whats going on but make and model is the first step.

the monitor will be powered by 110v via a connector from the main cab body to the front of the rptv,you should unbolt the body of the cab from rptv and check all the connectors are plugged in and use a multimeter to check the voltage there as well.
the make and model of the rptv should be on the back of the cab.
did you get a remote with this cab?

No remote. I will check out the cab tomorrow to see if the model is on the back. The main cab body/cp and monitor are separated already. What it looks like to me, is that there are some 3pin molex connectors that are used to power both the board and monitor. Even when I just plug it together bypassing the monitor from the board, the monitor main power turns on, but the screen shows nothing, and the led at the bottom is red.

Yeah, if I remember correctly from my 50" VF2, the monitor was definitely pulling power from inside the pedestal. Can't remember exactly what board it was pulling from but it was definitely a smallish board external to the model 2 set. This board may also have been downconverting the signal to 15khz as VF2 is a medium res game but those projection TVs are standard televisions converted to accept RGB.

did you buy this cab not working or did this fault develop when you plugged it in for the first time
from what you describe its points toward the power board,but it could be something as basic as a bad connection or solder joint

I bought it the way it is. Would the power board be able to power up the gameboard and not the monitor even though it feeds power to both.

Also, there is a small board that is external to the model 2 board that converts the signal to rgbs.

when i refer to power board i am talking about the power board inside the rptv itself,i know that if you have a failure on the power board then the led will remain red
from what i can understand so far you have voltage input to the rptv or the led would not light up at all,now if it were a signal problem you would still get operation of the monitor e.g the led would go green
so we are now looking towards component failure or connection on the rptv itself
next step is to get the rear panel off the monitor and check the fuses BUT beware there a some serious bad voltages in there so if you are not sure then leave it for a pro
from my experience these monitor can be real pigs to repair
one question,how old is this cab??

Its original, but only play for 2 yrs. I checked the fuse near the power cord and that one was fine, where else would i find another?>

these are quite complex monitors and not to be taken lightly when working on.
if you are a novice then don't attempt to go past fuse changes or connections as you could hurt yourself or cause even more damage to the monitor
please try a few things for me first;firstly remove the front cover under the monitor itself at the front of the cab,you should find behind this panel a control panel for the monitor with adjustments,switches and depending on the model you may see convergence buttons-this panel should have the on/off led
do this first and take some photo's if you can so i can see exactly what model type this is and lets take it from there

that is the exact model i worked on this week,the power board is the 5th picture down on the left-you need to check the 3 fuses on this board and all the plugs are connected correctly-use a meter to check the voltage on the black 2 wire plug you see in the photo as that is the voltage input of 110/120 ac volts
there is a led on the adjustment panel by the on/off switch,what colour is it lit?

The LED turns to green and then to red and stays red when the Main button is pressed. On the fuses, what should they register on my multimeter in order to tell if they are good or bad?

what happens when you press the test button on the panel(its next to the arrow buttons),there is something about the power wiring that don't look correct to me but as i am away for a week i cannot check until i return
set your multimeter to ohms and each fuse should read 0 (don't read the fuses with power on,always make sure your power is off when using the ohms setting)
the led starting green but going to red is a sign that the intial start up of the monitor is good, the fault could be a signal missing,a cable unplugged or a component failure
like i said before these are complex bits of kit so don't expect to have this sorted in a few hours,you will need to check every connection and fuses on all the different boards(convergence/power/deflection/signal decoder)

Nothing at all happens when I press the test button. No sounds, no monitor, nothing. I do get a sort of quick 'whine' sound when I press the Main button, but that goes away almost at fast as I press it. Sounds like it tries to boot up or something but doesnt. Also, I'm not sure if this gives any more info, but when its plugged in and Main is turn on, the fans dont even spin. I know this is a huge undertaking, and me being an amateur at best doesnt help. I am using this thing to learn. I'm just glad that people are williing to give me good information. Thanks.

P.S.
On the RGBS board in the monitor, there is a white molex 4 pin looking connecter that says 110 above it, but there is no wires going from it. Is that normal?

None of the fans spin... the side monitor fans, and the top fans above the RGB bulbs dont spin.

o.k more and more it sounds like the power supply board on the rptv is knackered,there are 3 fuse on that board (1 at the front,1 under a resistor just behind and another at the very back),get a flashlight out and check them all

Ok, so I replaced all 4 fuses... The 3 on the board, and the one near the power cord. I also found that the yellow wire connecting all the fans had a short in it. So I resoldered that, and switched the fuses. THE BEAST IS WORKING FINE!!!!! Thanks for all the help.
