Author Topic: Does a computer *Need* the common ground?  (Read 1303 times)

Does a computer *Need* the common ground?

When I took the back off my computer monitor my my mame cab, I noticed that there were 3 metal "Finger Springs" that pushed against a metal plate that went all over on the inside of the back panel. I am going to assume that this is a common ground. I have tried the monitor with out it, and it works fine, but I am just wondering what that is there for?  Does it need it?  Should I connect them all with a wire with alligator clips or something?

I believe what you are talking about is an EMI shield. It wouldn't hurt to connect them up but I would doubt you would notice a difference.

Yeah, I thought it was EMI when I first ripped it off.. But after taking some looks at it, I wondered why there were so many "finger springs" and wondered if they didn't use it as a ground..

Well if you think it is EMI, then I will roll with that.. just wanted to make sure that my cheap monitor was not going to explode soon. :)
