New Project: Pac-Man Topiary
« on: June 14, 2007, 02:11:59 pm »
I always thought it would be fun to make a topiary so I settled on this one.
It will be a yellow flowering shrub yet to be determined.  It's roughly two feet in circumference.

The construction began by using my duaghters play table as a circular template.  I purchase some clothes line wire because it's green and bends fairly easy, yet holds it shape enough to give me some guides while trimming the plant to shape.

I taped the clothesline to the table to give me a rough outline of Pac-Man, then duplicated the design with a second piece to give me two matching sides.  I tied some chicken wire to the top wireframe with some other thin wire I has laying about.  The shrub will be trimmed about two inches away from the wire frame, so I made the Pac-Man mouth a little bigger than I would normally.  Anyway, this is just a template so I can shape it as necessary once it gets growing.

So this is where I'm at right now.

The Pac-Man will be in a large pot, raised about 6 inches from the soil.  I'm using a pot instead of planting in the ground so I can wheel the pot out near the street with a balloon attached when we have parties.  I also want to take it with me if I move.

Not sure if you'll be able to find a yellow shrub that grows tightly bunched enough to make a topiary. And what do you need a guide for? Pac-Man is a circle with a wedge shape for a mouth. That only requires two cuts with a hedge trimmer and you're done.

I've identified two candidates already, just can't recall the names right now.

Not sure now that would do anything other than leave a big chunk out of the side of your plant exposing mostly bare branches  inside.  And the shape I'm going for is a disk rather than a ball.
