Formatting compy before TinyXP install
« on: June 14, 2007, 11:32:25 am »
Yesterday I installed a fresh, full version of XP on my computer.  It was running 98 before and when I did the install, it asked me if I wanted to format the hard drive first.  I said yes.

Then I found TinyXP and decided I should use that (the computer isn't the best, so a llighter version would help).

So I dropped the iso onto a disk and ran the install.  There is no option to reformat in the install.  It does ask if I want to replace the /windows directory (and I said yes), but it doesn't do a complete format.

Can somebody help me out?  I'm thinking the "format c: /s" command at a dos prompt, but not sure how to get there.  Win 98 boot disc??

I feel dumb today.  Thanks.

[edit] Win98 boot disk doesn't work cause of the FAT vs. NTFS.  Wont let me format.

I got tired of ---smurfing--- around with WinXP and all the annoyances so I resorted to keeping a library of bootable discs on hand.

For WinXP, I use BartPE.

For Linux I may use something like Knoppix.

Either tool has a format tool that will format the C drive.

Tiny XP needs a cleanly formated disk with no files on it.  That is why it does not give you the option of formating.  The disk must be formated before the TinyXP install is started.

To cleanly format your disk put in your XP CD and start the install again but do not proceed with the installation of windows XP.   Stop after the drive is partitioned and formated.

Then do your TinyXP install.

Thanks for the replies.  I ended up using this BartPE and it seemed to work just great.
