Can I Get a Custom Side Art Cut in a Circular Shape?
« on: June 12, 2007, 04:50:18 pm »
I am waiting for my joysticks and buttons to arrive (as patiently as I can  :banghead:) so I'm filling my time with other aspects of my build; namely the art.

I have come up with a Side Art design that I really like:

I wouldn't want it to have a giant white square around it though, I would want the outer blue ring to be the edge of the piece, or maybe one final white ring. Would places like Mamemarquees.com cut the piece to a round shape, or would I get a square piece and then be left to fend for myself in the cutting?

If it comes down to me doing the cutting, I will scrap the round shape and go with a square design that won't need to be cut in that way because I wouldn't want to try it.

Also, since I'm showing off my art, here's the CPO I'm working on.

---smurfing--- awesome! I love the art you've done up. Between your Simpsons work, and my Futurama cab, we've got the Matt Groening properties covered for cab art.

What colour is your cab? If you can't get a circle cut, you could always colour the outer area the same colour as your cab so it blends in.

Thanks, although I can't take all the credit as I didn't create the Simpsons characters from scratch (although there is a lot of cleanup involved in some of them.)

Unfortunately the cab has a wood grain look to the side (like the kickplate in this picture) so I can't really match it. :(

Check Mamemarquess, they might be able to do what you need.  I like the artwork and you can always paint the cab.

TTFN

Any chance you'll paint the cab? I know wood grain is retro and accurate for the time period the cab came from, but DAMN, wood grain cabs and tv enclosures are one of the ugliest things to come out of the 70's and early 80's.

Since the wood grain overlay is in such good shape, I really want to leave it intact (I would love to create a control panel in ribbed black plastic so it looked like a 2600 on steroids.) I figured that the round side art would work well with that 70's feel, and at this point I'm really convinced that I want to keep it.

I'll email Scott over at mamemarquees.com and see what he says. I guess if it's not easily do-able I may just leave it bare.

Well, don't give up yet. I think we've progressed enough as a species that cutting a round shape out of something shouldn't be too hard!

You could always take your time and cut the circle with an Xacto tool. You could also take the image to a sign making store, as they'd definitely be able to cut a clean circle.

I'd rather not risk wrecking a $60 set of side art by taking an Xacto to it, but a sign shop is something I hadn't thought of.

If you were to make a template out of MDF or something that was the size you want the circle to be then you could lay it over the art and trace it with the x-acto knife.  The only direction that the blade can stray is away from the art so the part you are keeping is protected.

BUT I am sure you can get it done for you somehow.  Cornchip had his sideart done at mamemarquees and it is a custom cut that I think they did for him, check it out here.  You might want to shoot him or pixelhugger a PM and see if it was cut by mamemarquees or not.

That's cool looking art by the way, I hope you get it to work I think it will look good on your cab.

Thanks for the link, I've sent a PM to cornchip.

BTW, if I could cut out a round piece of MDF, I wouldn't think twice about cutting out the side art. :D  I just have a history of screwing up stuff like that and I really want this project to look professional.

I had to cut circular data east art my self , I bought a really good pair of sewing sheers and took my time going around the edge. If mm wont cut it you might want to try that.

I noticed it looks like your making a 1 player control panel. You might want to think about going with a two player one. My current cab Is only one player and I wish to hell I had gone with a two player layout, But I'm to cheap to build a new one and buy a new CPO

Scott cut mine out - it's flower-shaped so I'm pretty sure a circle is no big deal.  I never really thought about it either - I just expected it to come cut in the proper shape and it was (not perfect but close enough).

rlemmon, it's a two player setup. ;)

javeryh, that's good news. I sent an email to Scott this morning but I don't have access to my email account while I'm here at work so I haven't checked for a reply yet. Now that I know he will cut it to shape, I can continue working on that design. :)

I got a confirmation email from mamemarquees.com that they will cut it round, so it looks like I am in good ... shape ...  :laugh2:
