PS2 joypad emulation
« on: June 11, 2007, 10:39:38 pm »
There's a lot of literature of how to emulate a Sony PS2 joypad.  Here's some examples:

http://www.gamesx.com/controldata/psxcont/psxcont.htm
http://www.geocities.com/digitan000/Hardware/22/e22_page.html
http://pinouts.ru/Game/playstation_9_pinout.shtml

Has anyone actually done it?   :P

Well I'm not sure why you'd want to.  Ps2 controllers are real cheap, probably more-so than the pcb you'd have to make to "emulate" the pad, so it's generally easier and cheaper just to hack an old pad.

Interesting though!

That's true, hacking an existing pad is a pretty good way to get access to the console.  Hacking a wireless joypad controller would even free up the cable.

I'm just playing with an idea of using some 3D sensors and other stuff within the context of a joypad.  Like an enhancement.

So it would be great to be able to replicate/emulate/synthesis/magicate etc the joypad standard and crunch it into the console....

Hope that makes it a little clearer!

Thanks for link.  I've already had conversations with Toodles, the main driving force behind the Universal controller.  I was hoping to get my bit working and then donate my code to his project.  He has it working with the PS1 Digital Pad, but not with the PS2 Analog Pads.

Any other link would be much appreciated!

Wow, what a cool project. If they could sort out Xbox support, I'd be all over that.

He's got quite a few format sorted.  I think he's still trying to crack the X360 encryption.  Bummer. Microsoft is so paranoid....  You think that the more open they are, the more support for their console they'll get. ????

Me, I'm still stuffed on the PS2 interface for the joy pad emulation :(

If you're willing to just solder wires down, there are some potential cost savings in doing it this way over anything other than a cheap-o digital controller that you happen to find in the clearance bin at a gamestop (which hopefully actually works), but they're minimal.

The real reason to do this is so that you can map things in ways which aren't possible with a standard gamepad hack, like hooking up a 49-way and having it emulate the left analog stick.

I have digital control emulation working, and am working on original dualshock (DS2 is harder) w/ full analog support.

Hey, the analog support in the signal domain is a bit harder.  As mentioned, I have found a potential way forward.  The 'normal' hack on a joypad (by soldering etc) is fine for most bods, to do a full signal emulation would be the ultimate hack.  Since it provides full flexibility on just how the joypad functions can be manipulated and even modify its functions mapping to totally unexpected actions.  Mmmm....

For most people this will not be worth the time and effort, since for arcade control this is a remapping exercise of the joypad to arcade equivalent buttons/sticks.

Its horses for courses.....
