Nintendo DS... ds-Xtreme ?
« on: June 11, 2007, 07:29:02 pm »
Hey there everyone.

I am considering buying a ds-Xtreme for my DS.  I just though i would run it by this forum to see what everyone’s thoughts are on these types of products.

Feel free to point out that i may be making the wrong choice to buy this particular product...  and if you can, suggest another.  I am reading reviews and most seem to be pretty positive for this unit.  Seems to be a easy way to get backups onto one medium.

Any thoughts ?   ;D

I have both a dsx and r4.  The r4 is better.  The dsx is nice and has a slick interface, but it boots slow.

R4 is absolutely awesome and works perfectly 100%.....it's very easy to use too......you can't go wrong with it.
Seriously. Will it fit in my basement or what?

Thanks for the replies guys.

R4 does look like a great alternative to ds-Xtreme.  Its ALOT cheaper, and i can buy as many micro-sd cards as i whish, to have as much capacity as i want.  ;)

I do have a couple of questions for you R4 owners...

1. What does the 'slow booting', SirPoonga mentioned,  have affect on ?  Is it just the initial start up of the game, or loading of stages etc... ?

2. I have read a few reviews on the R4 and the only bad point is that the download compatibility suffers.  What are your thoughts / experiences on that ?

Any thoughts or comments are more than welcome.

The R4 boots instantly tot he menu.  The dsx takes about 20 seconds.  But it does look nicer :)

I assume what you were reading was no download play.  This is a problem in general.  Download play has it's own encryption/signing that hasn't been broken.
If you are talking rom compatibility then the dsx and r4 are great.
If you are talking homebrew compat I'd say they are pretty equal in that, though R4 is easier to deal with.

hmmm..   I have read a review, on the ds-xtreme, that says download play does indeed work.

I also read somewhere that the ds-Xtreme devs cant talk about the 'download play' feature when selling their item, because of legal issues.

If this is true...  It may justify the spending the extra money on the ds-Xtreme.  Can anyone confirm or deny this ?

Maybe things have changed recently.  I haven't been keeping up as there hasn't been too many new DS games I have been interested in.
How often do you play local wireless with other DS owners?
The review for the R4 basically says the same thing for download play, it depends on the game.

If you want a cheap DSx I might be willing to part with mine.  I don't use it anymore since I got the R4.  It does have some advantages but not enough for most users.  I'd highly recommend it for parents that have little kids.  MicroSD is very small and easy to loose so not having any is an advantage in that situation.  (Edit: I see they have a new version, I have the older 512meg version)

If you do get the R4 be careful about putting the microsd in and out.  The spring on my broke.  It was a pretty easy diy fix but rather annoying.

I've been out so long I bet there's a couple firmware updates for both my cards :)

I have gone through 2 DS-Xs they have both had problems and required returning them to the vendor. I paid $129 for the DS-X. I paid $44 for the R4 w/1gb kingston micro sd.

The DS-X does not compare to the R4. DS-X has released 2 or 3 updates to their firmware. R4 has released 9. DS-X does not have "In Game Reset" like the R4 nor Action Replay cheats like the R4 does.

If you are buying it for your child then the DS-X might be the way to go, but you can get an R4 with a 1GB of space for much cheaper.

The new CycloDS Evolution is supposed to support download play on all games.  I may be getting some in if you are interested.  And I'm sure everyone here will vouche for me as a reputable seller.

Anyone know exactly what the difference is between the M3 Simply and the R4?  I remember there being something about being able to turn the early M3 Simply into R4 by soldering some connections...but exactly what for?
