Opinions on My Control Panel Overlay Artwork
« on: June 10, 2007, 12:55:29 pm »

I made it in illustrator so it is a vector and not just this low quality bitmap. The button placements are also not accurate. I also have since updated it to have a watermark of the text: "vs" behind the streetfighter text instead of akuma's logo, because felicia isn't a streetfighter character.

Here's a low quality pic of the cabinet which is white with light blue t-molding and chrome painted bezel and coindoors. It has a Vendetta Marquee but I'm gonna replace it with one I design that will be similar to the CP.

It looks good, but honestly, it needs way more colour. Maybe another character on the right side, and something to liven up the background. Yeah, your cab has a very clean, monotone colour scheme to it, but the CP overlay is still quite bland, colourwise.

yeah i just wanted it to look very clean, I've made like 3 versions of it.
here's one with sakura. I dunno I might try to redo it and make it alittle busier.

Well, that's definitely better right there with two characters. You could maybe add some dynamic action lines in the background, i.e. the sunrays in a japanese "rising sun" image. Borders and mild shading can also add some dynamism to the design while still keeping it clean.

Have you also thought about perhaps giving the CP custom text rather than "Street Fighter"? Since both characters are non SF characters, it's an odd concept right off the bat, even with the VS in there. Maybe something like "Extreme Fighting" or "Champion Battle", or whatever you can come up with that sounds catchy.

Actually Sakura is a Street Fighter (since Alpha 2)  I wouldn't use Felicia, at least right there, because 2 of the buttons seem to be kinda close to where her nipples would be, placement or pose should be altered a little (unless thats what you were going for)

I'd darken the border around the edges to give it more depth. I'd replace Sakura with Chun Li (shes more associated with SF and has been in more SF games then any other female street fighter) and as an added bonus she dressed in blue!  you could also color the VS behind the street fighter to match the capcom logo to kinda spread

I wont lie, Im having similar issues with my mortal kombat themed CP

EDIT: attached a quick mock up for you, I cant change Felicia's placement or Sakura  without the PSD file

I'm gonna work on it today.  I might add some orange to it.  I'm still waiting on my sanwa buttons in the mail so I have some time to mess with the control panel.  I'm also thinking of using a street fighter II championship edition marquee to keep with a street fighter theme.

mame marquees has a great mame marquee that looks like SF2:CE

http://www.mamemarquees.com/champion-edition-marquee-from-p-211.html

they also have a couple CPOS:

just some ideas, I dont think you'll want the CPOs but that marquee seems perfect for you

I personally wouldn't put a non street fighter character on the panel.  I did a street fighter control panel and it sits on my Vs the goonies cab and it looks weird lol.

looks good, Im not a fan of the stripes in the background, perhaps you could use the globe image like in the Super Street Fighter II marquee?

yeah i was actually thinking of incorporating that, I just can't find any high res pictures of it or vectors, and I dont really want to vectorize it myself.

There has to be ton of similar globe maps on the web in hi-res. Use Google Image Search and I'm sure you'll find a nice hi-res replacement.

You can also vectorize something like that quickly. You don't necessarily have to follow every nook and cranny on coastline of the continents. Just use the freehand tool to trace the contours of the continents, but add in quick little ragged movements to make the coast randomly craggy.

believe it or not I saw this after I made mine. But I really like the simiplistic approach you used and the color combination. I'm going with sanwa light blue buttons and ball top joysticks. Tonight I'll look for a map like someone suggested and incorporate it, we'll see how it goes.

I had a street fighter logo in the middle, but never could get it vectorized correctly so I had to take it out last minutes.  I wish mine had a little more to it like a logo or something but oh well.
