Who's playing the Wii's virtual console
« on: June 05, 2007, 05:50:29 pm »
I've wasted spent all of the last two days playing through Super Mario 64.  I have to admit, I'd forgotton how much fun that game was.  I'm doing pretty well considering I sucked at it when it first came out on the N64.

Anyone else hooked on the VC to the point of neglecting the more current Wii titles?

I think I'm getting ready to hit Link to the Past here.  Just finished Twilight Princess the second time.

Finished SMWorld as well.

Downloaded Sim City.  Gonna hit that someday soon.  I'm sure I'll take on SM64 at some point also.

I just wish the titles were a bit cheaper.

I only bought Bomberman 93 and Mariokart 64 - since it is far easier just to take one or two consoles to a lanparty than a whole slew for one or two games each.  Though when the NeoGeo hits at the end of the month, all bets are off.

I think I've bought too many vitual console games since the only one I played more then twice was Mario 64.  Some of the ones I bought were Super Mario Bros., Super Mario All Stars, Punch Out, and Toe Jam and Earl.  I'm thinking of getting Zelda: Ocarina of Time since I never played it and so many people say its really good.

I downloaded Ocarina of Time, but it didn't get much play.  I had a hard time reconciling the controls to the Gamecube controller.  I just picked up a classic controller so maybe I'll give Zelda another try.

The only other games I play regularly are Military Madness and Ninja Spirit from the TG16.  I think I'll have to check out what's available from the Sega catalog and give something there a try.  I'm also keeping some points saved for Paper Mario.

I played the heck out of simcity on Snes back in the day.  I haven't decided if I want to get it again.  I have almost the same game on PC, as well as simcity 2k, 3000, and 4.  But the snes one was a blast.

I never had a nintendo 64, so I bought Orcania of Time.  I never played the nintendo 64 version but in my opinion, it controls nicely with the classic controller.  I didn't have to unlearn what I knew so maybe that was an advantage.

I will probably get mario kart 64 if I pick up another classic controller.

I would not get MK64.  If you've play MK:DD, it's amazing what a huge step they took in handling and drifting.

SNES Sim City was such an improvement over the PC version.  Sim City 2000 was probably the best, IMO.  After that, it starting getting a bit too complicated.  When I gotta worry about bus stops, that's too far.

Of course, that's personal opinion. I own both and prefer MK64 to MKDD (and MKDS to both). Double Dash's cart control was slightly better, but the levels weren't very good at all. I think 64's incredible level design makes up for the lack of drifting.

Anyway, I already own everything I would want on the VC, so I've not bought anything.

Just for reference guys, MK is the universal abbrreviation for Mortal Kombat NOT Mario Kart.  When you throw mk's around like that, half of the viewers aren't going to know what you are talking about.  ;)

Personally I'll start using the VC once the pricing scheme becomes reasonable... 5 - 15 dollars to download a 10-25 year old game... THAT I ALREADY OWN... Yeah right.

Totally agree with you Howard.  When I read the posts, my first thoughts were about mortal kombat, not mario kart.  I still dont understand the interest in the Wii.  Nintendo is not innovative.  They are using last gen graphics, hardly any online support, no dvd player for heavens sake, and charging way too much for VC games...I had a Wii and sold it.  Games like cooking mama and big brain academy are great on the DS, but I dont want them to play on a console.  Surely not for 50 bucks also......

Under who's rule?

Besides, the terminology used afterwards makes it obvious to anyone that it's NOT the other MK.  The one, that as far as I'm concerned, died when it went 3-D.

Of course, Tahnok.  Twas why I said "I".  I do agree, the tracks on 64 were incredible.  But I also love most of the DD ones.  Baby Park with four players is just pure mayhem.

Did you just SERIOUSLY post this?  You might want to look up the term "innovative" again.  Your personal definition is a bit off.

And of course...we all need yet another DVD player.

I think the thread should be retitled and read: So who's still playing the Wii?

Coupled with the dire set of games, the jittery interface and the appalling cost of those retro games which money has already been made tens times over, one would ask the question: OK who sold there Wiis yet and got a Game Cube?

Its a question I bet is on everyones mind right now.  :o

A few of the unimportant channels are jittery.  I know the Mii one is.  But all the games are fine.

And I do agree, the VC games are overpriced.  But I haven't paid anything for the ones I have so far.  (see sig) ;)

Believe me I'm not rushing to buy a PS3 either.

I figured the Wii interface would assist my mother to use the internet and send email to our family scattered across the globe.  Its too responsive (the remote) and the jitteriness of the controller takes some getting used to.

For me, the many consoles I already have take most of my time like the DC and Original Xbox, the games I bought for them are now seeing the light of day, but much more playable than the Wii controler.

All my mates have sold their Wii or about to, and I thought I was apt to ask the question.

Besides as Shmokes is on holiday I thought I could get away with that comment.... :laugh2:

Its about time Nintendo just make these titles available for free? I can see why they dont, making money off a generation who were not around to play the games first time makes financial sense. But for us older gamers forking out for a game which we already have or have had at some point in our lifetime isn't really my idea of fun. I think it would be a nice innovation if Nintendo made its back catalog available for free.

they should have had a media recognition addon.

you plug it in the USB port, then plug your original media in it.  It confirms that you own the original cart, then downloads it for free....

And then charge 15 bucks per system adapter.

For money. Nintendo is awesome, but they are a BUSINESS. They are a CORPORATION. They want MONEY, and saying people can play these games for free GOES AGAINST MAKING MONEY. It's the same reason that we will never have anything made after Mickey Mouse enter the public domain.

I really enjoy my Wii, but I agree, it isn't everyones cup of tea.  I have actualy been catching up on my Gamecube games that I never played more than Wii games, but then, they are much cheaper.

Anyways, I also like my Xbox, and my PC, and many other things.

i love the virtual console. the wii is a fun console, but imho best used with another like an xbox 360. wii game lineup outside the vitual console is pretty limited.

I agree the prices are pretty high, I own most of the games already and I have the rest in digital format... yet I'm still compelled to buy them on the VC.  I think it's a convience thing, I don't have to hook up multiple systems, I don't have to go to my PC, I can sit on my couch and click a button and start playing them.

I bought kid icarus but only played it 2x, Paper Mario, & the original SMB (for my wife).

Now I can say that I've played Paper Mario, Super Paper Mario, & what ever the ones for the GBA & DS and I haven't finished any of them  :P

Looks like Metroid and Super Metroid are finally going to be making their way to the VC right about the time Corruption is released. Super Metroid might be the first VC game for me to buy, since, for whatever reason, my original cart has a lot of static on the video. I'd really love to play through with perfect video.

Edit: Just saw that Metroid has been released. I doubt I'll buy it, I already have several different versions of it (original, Zero Mission, Metroid Prime unlockable, etc).

I've bought a few.  I have Punch-Out and Bomberman, SMB and SMB World.  But I just bought Zelda II and am loving it.  I never played it.  It's always been this strange hole in my videogame history.  I just . . . missed it somehow, in spite of being a Nintendo fiend all growing up.  Damn, it's a good game, though.  Obviously completely different than the rest of the series, but the control is tight and the side-scrolling parts are really well designed.  Leveling up can be tedious, but that just comes with the RPG territory.  I'm having lots of fun with it, though.

when is Super Mario Kart coming out?  in my opinion, thats the best mario kart...er...MK for howard  ;D
