« on: April 19, 2003, 01:41:01 pm »
 ???
OK, I can't "TAB" in Mame to change the control configs, anyone have any ideas why or a way around the problem?
My control panel is complete, but the buttons are all mapped wrong.

Thanks!

LOL...sorry...it was little funny. ;D
Go to your mame folder and look for a folder called "CFG".
Then delete the default CFG file and when you start mame again your "TAB" will work again.
Now you get to play again..THE JOY !  :D

PS:this goes in the software forum though... :P

You're saying that if there's a CFG file, TAB won't work?? Are you sure about that?  I'd hate for the guy to lose all of his configs for nothing.  bsoder52, if you do plan on doing this, at least back this folder up.

I'd be a lot more inclined to think that maybe his "TAB" mapping is wrong (or loose) on his CP?  bsoder52, do you have a pass-thru keyboard hooked up?  Does TAB work outside of MAME (like in Notepad or something)?

This comes up a lot, and is covered in the alt.games.mame FAQ.

Yes, this is the only way known to restore 'TAB' back to bringing back the settings.  It usually happens when someone is trying to change the default settings when a game is running, and they pause the game.

OK, I can't "TAB"  *in Mame*
I guess he somehow messed up his default setting and only way to fix is delete the "default.CFG" file and restart mame(reasonable explaination).

Does TAB work outside of MAME?

Ok this is the last time I'm gonna say it... if you want to keep your settings do NOT rely upon cfg files.  Use the ctrlr files instead.  They are you can't alter them in game thus this will NEVER be an issue as long as you use them.

I agree, use ctrlr files and never change the key config in the tab menus.

What happen was you somehow screwed up your menu button and now you don't know it.  It's stored in the default cfg file.  That's why you delete that file, it will get rid of ALL of the changed you made in the general settings of mame.  Hence another reason why ctrlr files are better.

Sounds interesting.  There a tutorial somewhere regarding them?

Try your mame docs folder.
