tft comes on for a second then image goes

hello all
just been given a dell tft pc monitor
the screen comes on for a second when you plug it in, then just flickers and the image is lost and looks like the screen is off. when you switch it off you can see the screen flickers off.
any clues where i could start with this.

peale , possibly the backlight going off as it is perfect for a second drops in brightness then to nothing, i know very little in this so need lotsa help, is there a way i can check anything. cheers for that its a good possibility

grant the power lead is an iec so transformer is within tft case i assume. but im not sure i have you correctly.

guys i know nothing, enough not to die from pissing about but no more, any diagnostic help or things i can check will be most welcome. assume no prior knowledge in my case so dont ignore the simple( problems that is, im not saying im simple, ill leave that to others)

Could be a bad tube on its way out is overloading the inverter and causing it to shut down.  This is fairly common.   Usually requires a ccfl replacement.  The fact that the inverter does power the ccfl for a second is a good sign.  See alterrnate thread for ccfl replacement info.
