Picture tube damage or just circut board?
« on: May 18, 2007, 04:54:12 pm »
OK long story short. i had the neck board PCB hanging out the back of my cab a "friend" pushed it against the wall and snap... broke the HECK out of the neck board... i soldered it up a best as i could and got it working again... mostly... it works, except for green... no green anywhere.

As money is very tight for me right now, before i waste money buying replacement parts and lots of time working on this. or god forbid, having to explain to my roommate what happened to the extra TV out of her room while she was out for "girls night" could this be a problem with the picture tube or is it just the busted up PCB. I have no problem with finding a place to order the parts and install them, but i didnt want to waste money on a part that isn't going to fix the problem.

any ideas would be appreciated.

Should not be the picture tub as long as all pins are intact and line up with your board.  The other colors mean the picture tube itself is ok.  Just check the pins again and of course your solder repairs.

well that is a bit of relief... i took telecommunications electronics in college but i don't know much about TV repair (i didn't take that elective) anyways after another hour with a soldering iron and some 14GA jumper wire (to bridge the breaks on the circut board) i finally got my green back.

at least i know it is the board... if it goes again i will just try and order a new board from Mitsubishi. (but hey, if it ain't broke i ain't gonna fix it again!)

thanks again! ;D

Maybe you need a bubble on the back of your cab, so you don't do this again?

LOL, now you sound like my girlfriend :)

yes, i had already built a support system on the back so this wouldn't happen again. the green disappeared again because of the moving, it can't hit the wall again.

just in case someone is reading this comedy of errors (hey i am good to laugh AT) :)

chock up another 20 min with the soldering iron... apparently a piece of the PCB that i soldered to wasn't up to the job as a piece of it broke off. ah well, nothing a little more jumper wire and soldering directly to componet pins cant handle.

IT'S ALIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE (hmmm we need a Frankenstein smiley, seems with allot of frankepanel out there it might get used) now Igor, fetch me my MAME 115 Roms! mouhahahahahahahah!

I've had to repair many broken pcb's like this before and one thing I usually do first is to spread the cracked areas and super glue them first so that the board itself is fairly solid again. (doesn't take much glue either)
Then I commence all the scratching of traces for a clean solder joint, along with any wire bridging it may need. Can be a pain sometimes..... but glad to hear you have a handle on it it seems.

that is basically what i had to do, but just to make things more fun (like it wasn't fun enough having to do all this ::) ) the neck board has 4-5 wires coming off it that are soldered to the main board. when will people learn to use connectors! i couldn't remove the board from the cab without tearing the entire TV out of it's mount which involves tearing half the cab apart. The board would JUST reach out the back then i zap strapped it to the CRT neck and had to work on it there.

but in the end it was all worth it to get green back.

One good thing to come out of this... i got my Girlfriend to say (and i quote) "just get it working, don't bother ordering a replacement board, it doesn't have to last much longer, we'll build a new, better one and sell this one... then it is their problem!"

WOOHOOO  ;D that sounded like permission to take up the garage for another 6 months and spend countless dollars on new toys! groovy game gear here i come (i always wanted a light up panel)!!!

next day no green.... ARRRRRRGH!

anyways i re-soldered and it worked... 30 min later no green.... re-soldered... etc.

took out my micro heat gun (i love those things :) ) hit the resistor i was re-soldering and bingo, green back. anyways i unsoldered the resistor and one of the legs fell off. apparently it hit hard enough to break componets!

now i have to wait for Tuesday for the electronics stores to open... damn long weekends. no Mame for 2 days because of a stupid 2.2k ohm resistor!

Gee no old electronics hanging around that you can steal a resistor off of?    2 1K in series are almost 2.2K   2 4.7K in parallel are close too.

LOL, i did dig through my old electronics graveyard. nothing close enough on anything i would want to tear apart. also it is a 1/2 watt most of mine are 1/4 watt  and i didn't want to get into messing with mounting in parallel.
