That's one of the dumbest things I have ever read.  What kind of idiot would think that was going to be ok?

Congratulations to these teachers for being responsible for creating even more red tape and oppressive control from administration for public school teachers everywhere.

PS, yeah they went WAY too far.

A teacher was actually walking around in a hooded sweatshirt giggling doorknobs?  Holy hell.  That guy in particular is guilty of terrorism.  He terrorized those kids.  They were crying under their desks.

I hope to see some very serious repercussions here.

My wife just mentioned the IL article to me, then I come here to find the article about the kids terrorized in TN.  Jeez, what the hell...

Oh please, like you guys never did tornado/bomb/fire drills in school?

Maybe this went a little too far, but c'mon.

The key word in your comment is "drill".  The article states the kids were told "this is not a drill".  Big difference.

In fire drills, they don't actually catch the building on fire and tell students they are going to die.

I agree screening "Brokeback Mountain" was probably not the smartest thing to do (ie really stupid),but $500k in "psychological damage" from watching a movie that portrays homosexuality?  Whats going to happen to that kid the first time that her parents let her go anywhere other than church camp and she gets a dose of reality?

This happened in my hometown, even the syndicated morning shows are taking about it.  I'm not buying the part about it being a drill though. Supposedly the teachers pull a prank on the kids every year at this field trip. A prank to me would be having someone in a bigfoot costume running around in the woods or something not a crazy bastard with a gun. Needless to say there are a lot of pissed off parents in the area. I'm just glad my son doesn't go to that school.

By the way, Fall Creek Falls (the state park where this happened at) is a great place to camp or visit if you get a chance. I have been there many times and have never seen gunman on the loose, but beware if you hear the banjo music !!!

Fall Creek = the name of the body of water
Falls = refers to the numerous waterfalls in the park

So it's not named Fall Creek because of the amount of waterfalls?   ;D

This is kinda funny. One might say these kids are lilly-livered. Another might say this event was a ploy, as with various aspects of violent video games, to further combat train and militarize the public youth.

And on that BBM movie thing: the guardians had already complained due to the literature the kids were 'provided' for reading. Obviously they need to move to the deep south...or Utah.

And a little less telling them it's not a drill.  Next time, when it's not a drill, they will assume it is and not care.

Humorous in a dark way. And those 'ones' were just virtual apsects of my personality, not necessarily permanent. Regardless, a lot of the kids I see these days, whether fat or skinny, seem to fight less than when I was a kid. This might be a good thing...but it might have a drawback within the topic of the thread. Yes, drills are good, especially when communicated as such. These teacher folk are not drill instructors, so they goofed. And they jumped the chain of command.

BUT, as with anything regarding children, the parents must educate them about these things and how to handle themselves. If they get in a bind and they haven't the gumption, etc, then that's how the ball rolls. I mean, in more violent societies, the parents didn't want to keep around offspring who couldn't handle themselves an all. They only took it personally if they kept producing similar offspring.

Not that I'm advocating those kinds of social conditions. Merely illustrating. Kung fu, is not only moving within the flow, but the ability to discern smoother currents, from a cosmically-functional perspective.

Hey shorthair - leave the south out of this, ok.  Really.  Or at least don't make generalizations.  (probably a  :censored: Yankee).   ;D

I agree with the fact the kid will face far worse than BBM,  but most of us in the south are fairly well educated - sadly -  to the ways of the world.  However, that sub needs to understand that NOTHING that happens in his/ her class is sacred these days.

Second of all, this is total BS that the principal didn't fire those idiots in TN on the spot.  I keep saying, and get closer to believing, it's all about who you know, NOT what you know that will keep your job for you in this business called education.

Of course...as our definitions differ.

RTS: It's not a matter of education, but of mode: many appear conservative in attitude, vs conservative in methodology and visionary in outlook.

So at 11 yrs old, you would have gone after this guy, or while the adults were all acting like this was real you would have sat there and laughed it off?
Somehow I don't think so.

Actually, I think I wouldn'tve been the only boy not freaked by this. A lot of kids' parents in my neighborhood had guns and the kids fought a bit. I got into my share of fights. Once, when I was in soccer, this ref we had - who happened to be the father of a kid on the other team...can we say conflict of interest?! - was bein a dick to me. I almost went up to him and kicked him in the ---smurfing--- nards. There are times, occasionally, I wish I had. I was only afraid of adults if there was a need. If it became a power struggle*, I played till the end, however final.

* like with my fifth grade teacher who had caught some of us eating cool-aid in class and assigned 200 times to write 'I will not eat in class', and it went up 200 more each day, and I basically thought he could get ---fouled up beyond all recognition---, though the others who hadn't finished the first day caved in and made up whatever amount they'd progressed to in their delay...I came in the following monday and looked on the board to see whether it was set to 1000....well, it was gone. I didn't even turn in my initial, I think it was, 120. He later acted like nothing had happened.

Drills are good and fine - this wasn't a drill. They told the kids they were gonna die. Even worse, apparently the administration didn't know anything about it. Someone's going to lose their job alright....

There was a shooting at my school and kids nearly got caught in the crossfire because they had no idea what to do.  I'm not entirely opposed to the idea of drills like this.  Perhaps a little less drama, though.

A typical boy thing to say. Bruce Lee was a kicks-ass ---maternal-smurf---, right? Then how come he died from a brain lesion? He was very powerful, but I think very ego-driven. The real kung fu masters are like the real rich people. You don't even know who they are.

Wow . . . you ALMOST kicked him in the balls.  I take back everything I've said about you.  I had no idea you were so fearless.  You and I are not so different when it comes to that, come to think of it.  I have almost decided to take up hang gliding.  I was once standing in a bank aand I almost decided to rob it.  I almost punched a guy that was picking up on my wife at the bar the other night.  I almost went and talked to dozens of hot girls when I was single.  ---smurfing--- fearless, I am.

I almost shot someone, a fellow troop who was being a dick, and acting outside of his command authority, but wasn't being checked by those above him. I raised my rifle and was ready to sight. Except that he was driving away with some of my other fellow troops and I didn't want them to get hurt if he crashed. When he found out about it, he came and threatened me...'if you do that again' sort of thing. I told him, go for it. For being a southern-pride yokel, who was almost twice my size, he didn't.

I could be making all this up. What do you think?
