Color change in a ROM
« on: May 09, 2007, 10:54:06 am »
I want to make a (barely) customized version of TRON.  The only thing I want is: the blue things red, and the red things blue.  (I would also like to change the main splash screen, but that's a waaaay lower priority.)

I know nothing about making this happen, but my vague understanding of this stuff makes me think one ROM controls color.  Could someone who knows how just swap red for blue on that ROM and have it work for the whole game(s)?

Thought software forum would be the place to ask this.  Sorry if that's wrong.

yikes.

I think your best bet is to get the MAME source and examine the tron driver for it.  That will hopefully give you some insight as to where the color information is coming from and hopefully how to gently tweak it (or the ROM) to do what you want to do.

Since the ROMs are all checksummed before running them, you'll have to recompile MAME anyway to get around the checksum issue if you do modify the ROM.

Either that or swap signals on your video cable.   ;D

Could something as simple as swapping blue for red work?  I need to try this...  Maybe a component video set up with the RCA plugs swapped accordingly.

Thanks for the idea.

I'd ask the folks in video on that one.

I've actually done this before on tapper which is the same hardware, but it was many years ago and I can't remember how exactly I did it.  I fixed the colors for the guy that did the simpson's tapper hack.   I do remember it wasn't through the color prom.   You might look at turaco that might be able to do what you want w/o hexediting roms, I seem to remember they had an unusually large number of colors you could select from when editing a sprite or tile.
