Rules for Quote FU?

You can only clip from the ends of the quotes. No cutting stuff out in the middle, and no adding stuff.

I recently read these words and was confused by them.... it happens a lot.  I am curious if some sensei can enlighten this grasshopper.  Does the proclamation above simply mean that it is not good clean quote fu if we remove words that fall somewhere between the first and last word of the quote?  I suspect that I took part of it to mean that we shouldn't use quotes from the middle of a post and now that is not what I am seeing anymore.  Maybe I don't need clarification after all, but I would love to hear some other quote fu wisdom.

Now we can get rid of that first part as it probably won't be needed. YOu will be left with...

some of you will start asking questions before your penis gets in the way. (Regardless, I'm enjoying my time.)

From there you can clip off more from either end or both ends to make the sentence mean whatever you want. Such as...

your penis gets in the way. (Regardless, I'm enjoying my time.)

or...

some of you will start asking questions before your penis

or both ends...

start asking questions before your penis

But you can't take out certain words just to make it work better. Such as...

your penis gets in Regardless

or...

some of your penis gets in the way. (Regardless, I'm enjoying my time.)

No adding stuff or mixing up words obviously. You are getting into a mangle if you go that route.

So, ya, just clip from the ends, not the middle, and don't add anything. Even punctuation



Rarely, but sometimes it is acceptable to clip from the middle if you add an ellipsis. This is highly discouraged, and is usually reserved for the beginners or the elderly.

I would never add anything not originally written or completely hack something up.  I'm pretty sure I'm guilty of clipping out middle sections, but that can happen in the midst of Cooperative Quote Fu.

May I suggest another new term for this discussion: Quotiquette

Should you draw the line if I was to create sentances using multiple proper quotes, similar to a note made from letters cut from magazines?

Example:
