I've heard bad things about JiffyLube here in Chicago.  For example, I know of TWO people who had work done there and learned the hard way that hoses or caps weren't re-connected or closed properly.  I decided I'd never go there.

Having watched that video, I feel pretty vindicated in my decision.  Truly disgusting.

Just don't get the extra services. I don't. Besides, it's really a matter of accountability down through the levels to ensure the training and peformance of any employee is up to par.

A friend of mine got an oilchange at Jiffy Lube.  They never put any oil in after they drained it, she drove away, a couple weeks later her engine is seized.  In the meantime, the franchise manager has been fired and nearly every employee too.  So she's out a 2 year old car over a $15 oil change.

Oh man that sux... at the end of my internship last summer in Phoenix, I got my oil changed at a Jiffy Lube before making my 2000+ mile trip back home.  Normally, I do this kind of stuff myslef, but I didn't have any of my tools with me.  They were pricey ($50 ish for an oil change and new air filter) but luckily I didn't get screwed.  Had I known how shady their reputation was, I wouldn't have gone, I would have gone somewhere else...  wow...  :dizzy:

It's not just Jiffy Lube. It's not some nefarious decree passed down from upper state or national level management to their employees. It's how auto repair Works. Every couple of months a TV station will do an undercover and say "Wow, they're charging hundreds, nearly thousands of dollars for complicated repairs and in a majority of places either don't do them or while doing them intentionally damage components to ensure future repairs".

Dealers, private family operated businesses, big chains? All the same track record of cheating their customer base. Best I can suggest is to make friends with mechanics you can trust, or be perfectly ready to pay a "Not fixing it yourself" tax.

I too no longer go to Jiffy lube. I took my car there for an Oil change and they recommended I have a AC tune up, since I do this with my regular mechanic i declined. The AC stopped working that day. A couple of days later I took to my mechanic and he found that it had 1.5 pounds extra coolant. (no idea why they would add so much coolant). Have not been back to a Jiffy lube since.

while it may be true that this is not only a problem at Jiffy lube, I had read an article a while ago that basically stated that the quotas impossed to the franchises are very high. Which prompts them to take "short cuts".

Since you said you declined, why would they add ANY coolant at all?  They DO have to pay for that stuff, so why would they even do something like that, given that you would be leaving the shop, and might very well not return to them, meaning their "error" would end up costing them money they never recouped?

Because most Jiffy Lube employees are guys who got fired from real garages for being drunk or high or drunk and high.
