Partition magic / copying old drive to a new help
« on: May 03, 2007, 10:53:20 am »
Ive run out of space on my primary drive,
so i bought second drive and partition magic and copied the partition on my filled C drive over to a larger drive as a primary partition.
The problem is that i cant give that new drive the letter of C and therefore cant boot from it. ive tried using partiton magic from the disk and loaded up in dos and theres no way to change drive letters there, and if i load up into windows i obviously cant change the letter of the system disk to free it up for the new one.
what am i doing wrong, and what do i need to do?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you make that partition bootable (critical)?  Did you disconnect the cable from the back of the old drive and plug that into the new drive, and put the old drive at the end of the cable?

the only option during the copy process from Partition magic was whether or not to make it a logical or primary partition. I set its a primary. So im assuming that that means its bootable.
i then removed both drives, and set the jumper of the freshly copied drive to master and placed it first on the end of the IDE cable.
i get diddly squat.  my bios sees nothing..

Are you plugging it in by itself or is the old drive still connected?  Setting the drive letter is definitely not your problem, as that would happen when the OS loads.  If you're BIOS isn't picking it up, you're looking at a hardware problem.  Obviously the HDD works, since you already mounted it as a slave and copied everything over to it, which leads me to cables.  Make sure the power cable is connected, and double-check your jumpers.  My first reaction is that you misread the label telling you how to set it as master.  If you're sure you have it set as master, try setting it to Cable Select, instead.

had to remove the jumper!
wont boot and appears transparent to bios if set to master or CS
