Yes the Four Horsemen... great faction (yawn) it consisted of Rick Flair and whatver 3 random scrub wrestlers they could scrounge up at the time (depending upon the incarnation). Again this a nostalgia thing. Sure rick (and only rick) had some great mike skills and rick (and only rick) can really wrestle, but all-in-all there was nothing lasting from the horsemen other than the concept of the faction. The faction concept revolves around the fact that you can take one guy that can really wrestle or has really good mike skills and hae him carry several lesser wrestlers.
*sigh* Some people mis the point about the hell in a cell match and Mick Foley. The violence is only 1/3 of the match. A base of real, actual, fundamental wrestling skills (i.e. NOT hardcore wrestling) and a real, unique character with a back-story and decent mike skills are the other two thirds. In HIAC the amazing part was the real wrestling moves used after poor old mick fell through the cage and the undertaker jumped down, fracturing his already broken foot even more. So you have a one-legged man fighting a guy literally knocked silly and they STILL manage to give 5-10 min of fundamentals instead of just fake punching each other or ending the match.
As I said, undisputed gretest match ever..... that is for true wrestling fans that never stopped watching instead of casual "I watched some in the 80's and again in the 90's" band-wagon jumpers.
There aren't many wrestlers out there that can wrestle hardcore AND can wrestle traditionally AND have a solid character with a rich history AND can actually entertain just by talking. Mick and the Undertaker are probably the only two actually, which is why this match turned out so well. That, along with some bad luck for Mr Foley and old pros like Terry Funk, who had sense enough to stall and thus enrich the story while Mick recovered.
Now sure there are a lot of wrestlers out there that can do 1 of the 4 often they can do 1 of the 4 much better than these individuals, but nobody has the total package like they do.
Just to give a run-down of some of the "greats" and why they aren't as good.
Hulk Hogan/ The Rock/ Stone Cold ... One dimensional characters which are wildy popular and yet very limiting (which is why the WWE "rotated" such uber characters so the fans didn't get sick of them.) Their wrestling ability is severely limited... in the case of HH he couldn't wrestle his way out of a paper bag.
Chris Benoit / Bret Heart / Lance storm ect... No personality what-so-ever. They've all put on some of the greatest wrestling clinics in the history of the business, but outside of uber wrestling nerds, remember these bouts because there's no back-story to inject emotion into the match and all parties mentioned have about as much personality as a greasy spot on the mat.
Giant Gonzales / Kevin Nash / Yokozuna ect.... Pure gimmicks. These men either have great presence, great size or both. Their wrestling abilitiy is limited and their mike skills often aren't so great. (nash being an obvious exception). They usually spend one week wrestling followed by 6 months in rehab from pulling something.
Ultimate Warrior / Macho Man / Lex Luger / Coco beware ect... Okay this is gonna hurt but somebody needs to tell you this. These guys suck! They can't wrestle, they have rather stupid characters, and all-in-all they had a career based on a catch phrase. The reason you loved them so much and have such fond memories of them is because you were 6 at the time.
You'll still love them, I do, but you have to admit to yourself that they suck and all their matches also sucked.
I could go on but the point is "total package" wrestlers are rare, getting two in the same ring is rarer and getting them to pull off a gimmick match is rarer still. HIAC was somethign that shouldn't be possible, and it'll never happen again.
