How do you get the shadows in most of the fighting games (SF2 type) to calm down?  Most of them are flashing too quickly.  I can disable the layer but any other suggestions?  Hard to play the fighting games while rolling on the ground swallowing my own tongue.

Yikes, this one's beyond my expertise.  You might want to ask at the official Mame board ( www.mame.net ) or find a different hobby ;)

Sorry to hear that.  IANAD, but two possible (but money eating) changes that might help:

Buy an LCD monitor.  LCD monitors can't flash quickly like CRTs.  Might help, especially if the LCD isn't too top of the line.

If your computer is < 1 Ghz, buying a new computer might help for many of the games.  However, if the original game flashed like that, this won't help. :(

I'm sure there's software ways, too, but that's out of my league.

Maybe your eyes are more sensitive than mine, but none of the fighting games I've came across have flashing shadows.  There are one or two that have emulation problems but the games aren't intended to look like that.

Turning on vsync, triple buffering and setting a very high refresh rate might help as they all tend to remove graphical errors.  But in all honesty I can't find an example of a fighting game with flashing shadows.
