Campus Shooting
« on: April 16, 2007, 01:19:12 pm »
As some of you may know, I go to Virginia Tech...  there was a horrible shooting this morning, and 22 people are dead.  I'm ok, and as far as I can tell, my friends are ok.  Please keep the victims and families in your thoughts and prayers.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070416/ap_on_re_us/virginia_tech_shooting

They're saying this is the worst campus shooting in U.S history.  :'(

My little brother went to VT. He graduated last year. I wonder if his buddies are ok?

I didn't know you went there, Haruman.  I'm truly speechless about this tragedy.  I hope you and yours continue to do well.

Radio said the count is up to 32 and it has become the worst shooting of any kind in US history.

I posted this elsewhere a few mins ago, but I feel like ranting here as well.  Sorry for the language... this stuff just really upsets me.  I'm glad you are ok Haruman, and I pray everyone you know is as well.  Keep us informed of what's going on there... I just heard the FBI are taking over the investigation.  --

This is sickening, and very frightening to me sitting at a school that ranks pretty high up on the "least happy student" lists.

I just wish these fuckwits would kill themselves from the start and be done with it.  I'm not condoning suicide, but ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---... go kill yourself and write us a sad note on how you weren't hugged as a kid and that your mom was a whore.  Maybe blame Hollywood, games, and rap music too for good measure.... but why kill others for no reason?

---smurfing--- ---uvulas---.  My heart goes out to all those affected... it's just not fair.

A very sad situation. I'll be praying for everyone involved.

It is very odd though that one guy with two handguns could do so much damage. Are they sure it was only one shooter Haruman?

Yep, tons of people. Not many places to hide. Easy pickens. What a bastard. I can't even begin to comprehend why someone would do such a thing.

Nuts.  People are insane.

That said.

News reports the guy had a 9mm gun and a .22 .

If he shot 50+ people, and has killed 30+, hes either a really good shot, or spent a lot of time reloading.

I'd probably be hiding in the closet, but I'm surprised noone tried to stop him, especially in todays world.
But wasn't it fun to think you won the lottery, just for a second there???

Those columbine kids were loaded with guns and only killed 13 I believe. There has got to be more to this story than what we have so far.
They originally said they were hunting for a second gunman.

Our news was reporting that he lined people up against a wall and executed them.

This is why more people should take advantage of concealed weapons permitts and carry a gun all the time.

Will be a few days before the story settles down.  I heard that he was carrying (2) 9mm pistols.  Many 9mm's can have a clip capacity of 14 + 1, so that would be a total of 30shots before reloading.  A single reload of each would give him an additional 28shots.

Thats only a minimum 1 reload and possibly 2 or 3 total.

Assuming each shot was a kill.  Not likely for someone wandering through a campus taking potshots.

The execution thing is sounding more likely.  Wackos.

Most likely, the guy got into an argument over whether or not Nintendo joysticks could break, and went off the deep end.

I just heard that he apparently chained the door shut on a classroom so noone could leave. In situations like that, I don't understand why people would just take that. After so many killed and you know you are gonna die, might as well make a stand.

It only takes a couple seconds to load a fresh clip if you are carrying spares.

Oh, I totally agree.  Just pointing out that 50+ shots doesn't require a ton of reload time if you are prepared....which makes this all the more messed up....

They are reporting here it was over a girlfriend.

What is really nuts is that someone killed a student in the morning and they didn't shut the school down and send everyone home.  The second round of shootings happened two hours later.

They think now the shootings are related.  Duh.

The original shootings in the dorm were reported as "someone falling from their bunk" so there was some confusion as to what originally happened.

The second shooting occured in a crowded engineering classroom.

I'll post them P&R if anyone requests.

We had a suicide here of a woman who's child was "kidnapped".  Probably heard about it (Trenton Duckett)  It was national news for a while.  The cops left her myspace page up in hopes it would generate tips from people posting.

There was a murder/suicide in my area - two people I went to school with. Myspace was mentioned quite a bit by the news, about certain blogs and comments showed something might happen. Anyways, their myspace sites were left in tact too.

I can't agree with you all enough - if you're that ticked off at the world, just kill yourself - WHY must you feel that you have to end the lives of 32 others, and change forever the lives of everyone else on that campus, just because something bad happened to you?

My wife and I first heard of it this afternoon around 12:30....and just sat stunned and horrified as the number of dead continued to increase.  I've just been in shock, I think, most of the afternoon. I have some former students that are heading off to college (read: away from home) next year that I have become friends with over a span of 10 + years, as well as their families.  This makes it even harder to let them go.

Our prayers are with the entireity of the Va Tech family.  It's just an unimaginable tragedy.

NO!  This is why far less people should be allowed to OWN a gun !!

Why do you think that everybody should have a gun? Is this Wild West or what?
Think of aggressive people always having a gun with them. I don't want to know how many innocent people would be shot just because he thought that there would be a threat.

This is a terrible act that seems to be very close to some here on the boards, so can we please keep the Pro/Con gun bickering for a separate P&R thread in recognition of this tragedy? Moral profiteering from the tragedy of others in their own thread is just tacky.  :(

Here's hoping that the people affected by this sickening event get all the help and support they can. Most of us can never really know how we will react to this kind of extreme situation, and here's hoping to whatever various deities this crowd supports we'll never have to.

You are absolutely right  :'(  My thoughts go to the victims and their families and friends.

"Moral profiteering" was not my goal but I think it's incommensurately to say that more people should carry weapons all the day when such a terrible thing has just happend .....

Actually, I disagree.

Tragedy such as this is often the necessary catalyst provoking debate/change which might help prevent such a horrific thing from reoccurring in the future.

Without learning from what has happened ultimately results in these poor people dying without purpose. (Purpose is probably the wrong choice of word but I think my point is clear.)

I turned on the tv here this about 7am this morning (Sydney channel 7) and was greeted by news reports of the shooting. My first thoughts were how awful and to offer up a thought/ prayer for those affected.  :'(

My wife just called me and told me about some stuff she saw on the tube. She saw an interview with the ER doctor that treated the survivors... he said the he didn't treat a single victim with less than 3 gunshot wounds. That isn't to say that he treated all the survivors, bet the several that he did treat had 3 gunshot wounds a piece.

She also saw an interview with a student that was in a classroom in the building. He said they barracaded the door when they started hearing the shots. The gunman tried to get in but could only get the door to open a few inches, so he stuck his arm in and started randomly firing. They slammed the door shut again, and then he just started unloading into the door. He stopped for a second and they heard a clip hit the ground and another inserted into the gun. I am not sure if he shot at them anymore or not, but they heard him walk down the hall and start shooting elsewhere. Thankfully nobody was killed in that room.

I guess it is safe to say that this guy reloaded multiple times.
