New Wii browser is here!
« on: April 12, 2007, 04:03:25 am »
For those who were unsure of this at first, the changes are truly awesome!!  I'd still like to see a USB keyboard for it, but I didn't have too much trouble typing this either! BRAVO OPERA AND BIG N! :applaud: :applaud:

(NOTE: The below was added AFTER I got back to my PC)

From the get-go this final version is impressive.  The menu driven opening screen is wonderful.  Connection times are VASTLY superior to the test version.  The ability to zoom in and out has been enhanced, as well as text readability at even some of the smaller screen sizes.

I'll admit, without that keyboard, typing is still an issue BUT the new Wiimote keyboard pointer is steadier, less "jerky" than the original.  However, with all the new features, playing existing flash games on this thing just took a step up as you can now hide the toolboar and adjust the screen (I would think) to be comfortable viewing on most TVs.  Case in point: Orisinal's site never really displayed well, the icons were much too small.  However, just a couple  of plus button clicks on the Wiimote and they are fine, without becoming gigantic!

When one considers who this browser is designed for, Opera and Nintendo have really done a fine job with the final version in my opinion.  So much so that my Mom, who wanted to get internet access at home for email and such, may find her son suggesting she think about the Wii as the browser is free for now and cheap as heck after June 31st (she does not have a lot of money and with Dad in the nursing home low cost would help).

Heck, before anyone suggests it - once I have a new job, I might just get her one myself!

Can the cursur be changed?  I found the giant mario-like hand to be quite distracting while playing Flash games.

being able to move the scroll bars with the DPad is my new best friend on the wii browser.

havent seen anything like that unfortunately...

I agree that its a huge step in the right direction, I had worried that the final version would be no more than added support, but the added functionality is great.

I agree with Mal -  I don't think they've fixed a way to do away with the finger pointer yet.  I was reading this morning where several internet plug-ins are still not available eiter (I think "plug-ins" was the word used, but could be wrong), but the implication was there that this might be fixed in future releases.   As far as the finger goes, this shows what I know about programming, but it strikes me  that this would be an easy fix...just change the icon, OR add a feature that allows the user to do so.

How do you hide the toolbar?

Yeah . . . it would probably take a single programmer over at Opera less than ten minutes from start to finish to change the cursor.  Maybe a day to have multiple cursors with a settings screen to make them user selectible.

I THINK (keyword think) that it was mentioned somewhere prior to the release that any flash app set to use a non-default cursor would now make the wii cursor disappear.  The problem is most flash games don't use a real cursor, (by real I mean the system cursor) so we don't see any difference.  Someone good at flash might want to test that to see if it was just a rumor or not.
