It was $199 I believe.

This is a good move, but it should have been made a while back if you ask me.  I love my PSP as I've said here before, but its price point really hurt it.

Now its in an area that I will contemplate a purchase.  But as of right now my Tapwave Zodiac does all the PSP would do and more.  Though another portable movie player would be handy.

I paid full price ($199 at the time) and it was worth every penny.

Of course the price went down. I just bought a 1.5 used about a month ago at that price.

I think he was talking to me about the Zodiac.  And to answer your question, no I dont.  I have Duke Nukem, Spyhunter, and the Z-Pak Adventure.  But I did buy four of them for $25 a pop...I hope to get the last one in my area when CompUSA closes in June.  They wanted $300 for the 32 meg one at Christmas, even though at the other I bought my four 128s the day before at the previously mentioned price.  Such a mismanaged company.

Seems to me they would be better suited dropping the price further to compete with the Nintendo DS.

I remember seeing my compusa having doom 2 for 5 dollars and i was going to get it.  then i figured i wasnt going to get a tapwave just for one game.  yeah compusa sucks.

well its actually more than 170 if you figure in a 1gb mem stick.  but its worth it if you want something to play emus on and are interested in a few of the game it does have.  i dont own any psp games but i may get killzone liberation since the demo was decent.  o and the psp plays doom so right there im happy.

you have to keep in mind, as far as sony is concerned, they aren't really competing with the ds
let's face it, the ds is the market leader and isn't going anywhere
does that mean that the other systems blow?
no
i own both an xbox and a ps2
i own both a psp and 2 ds's (one is my fiance's)
179 is a steal for what it does
i enjoy my d.s. if i'm sitting in bed or around the house
but if i REALLY want to game on the go, it's psp all the way
just look at burnout and compare them between the two
it's laughable

don't get me wrong, i love nintendo, and i love my wii (too bad the game publishers don't feel like supporting it properly) but there is room for 2 handhelds in my life

i'm really sick of people saying that they are charing too much
if you want to talk about that, look at apple and their ipod
then look at their market penetration
you have to realize, the psp is a gaming machine (a quite nice one) that also does what ipod does, fairly well (although i'll never give mine up)

i'm actually quite surprised that the psp hasn't taken off more
i guess it's harder to see video gaming as "cool" when compared to music

The only thing I currently want the PSP for is the PSX emulation.  Pocked-sized Destraga and Jade Cocoon.   That price really isnt sounding that bad right now.
Have you actually PLAYED a PSP?
Yes I have, I just don't see enough games available for it to justify buying one.  We're way past launch on this one and the games only trickle in.  I've been down this road in the past.  I have a near new Sega Game Gear in original box in my closet that was way more advanced than the Gameboy that was out at the time.  My son loved it the first week he had it.  Then he wanted a Gameboy because it was what all his friends had.  The Gameboy beat a better system then because it was cheaper.  Seems to be the trend now as well.  Remember the Atari Lynx?  Neo/Geo Pocket?  The road is littered with systems that I agree were far superior to Gameboy, but the fact is that price matters!

not that it matters buttttttttttttt.......

on ign, there are 24 games for both the psp and for the ds that have received "editor's choice" status

i tend to agree with their reviews for the most part, and often base purchases off of their reviews

some notable psp games that are worth the price of admission are...
burnout
daxter
ratchet and clank
tekken
any sports game because the ds only has mario hoops
lumines
mercury
exit
ultimate ghosts and goblins (best in the series)
loco roco
killzone

It matters.  Don't get me wrong, I think the PSP is superior to the DS.  However, kids make or break most systems, and my kids spent their money on the DS because of games like Cooking Mama and Pokemon.  I absolutely hate those games, but my demographic doesn't account for the bulk of most handheld sales, as Nintendo can atest.

The PSP is a really good platform for gaming and watching movies.

I upgraded to 3.11 and was amazed at the improvement of the OS and the extra features.  The downside is no homebrew yet, but I don't think that is a biggie as I have Namco Battle and Midway Arcade Treasures which plays much better than mame could ever do and with Wifi support.

The price drop is a fantastic idea, and a great chance to own one of these toys.  Link it to a PS3 and you are buzzing.  As Shmokes says:  I'm a Sony Fanboy.  So if that means I like owning the best on the market then so be it.

The DS is for girls and small children so go figure.  Every title I see for the DS is cute and girly - no Vice City or Wipeout on the DS.....   :laugh2:

Bite the bullet and pick up one of these PSPs.

You won't be disappointed.   :applaud:

Don't forget 2 GTA titles and lego starwars (not exclusive titles) are also GREAT on this handheld.  I've played the DS version, nothing compared to the PSP version.

Exit/Exit2 are fantastic games, as are Loco Roco.  Burnout is an alltime fav, as is virtual tennis....

I had a GameGear, and it was far superior to the gameboy at the time.  I loved that thing, and played the heck out of it.  I even had the adapter so you could play all the sega mastersystem games on it.  Take a step back from the "which will win the war" view of things, and ask yourself -> if you can afford it, wouldn't you rather have the "better" system?  Of course it would depend on if there were games to play, and there ARE for the PSP, as well as the ability to watch movies, play PS1 games, run emulators (I regularly play GBA games on my psp).

Even if sony drops games support for the PSP tomorrow, there is still a large library of PSP games (near 300), and the ability to play all GBA games, most PS1 games, etc.

I see the price drop as possibly too little too late for the US market, but who knows.  I see kids ALL THE TIME with PSP's at the airport, malls, etc.  Heck, I even see adults with them all the time.

But don't you guys think the controls on the PSP are just a little wonky?  The analog thumbstick is ok, really nothing to shout about, mainly since it's placed so awkwardly.  Then there is the d-pad, which you must have the thumbs of Andre the Giant to properly operate.  I've only played maybe a fourth of the games you guys listed, but I can't imagine that I would love the games, since I am irritated by the basic controls.  In my mind there is nothing worse than playing a well emulated/produced game on a less than stellar set of controls.

Anyway, I'm still amazed by the selection of handhelds these days and I hope the PSP's price drops further .... and maybe they could do a little redesign to make it smaller and with a nicer set of controls, maybe a d-pad like the original PlayStation's, at least.

In a perfect world ....  :dunno

You're an idiot.  No... seriously.... you are.

Say you don't like it.  Say you're a Sony fanboy, but why do you spout ---Cleveland steamer--- like this?  What a dumbass.

Why am I an idiot?

All those that have a DS (and the Wii) in my work and circle of friends are women and small children.  Those who own the PSP and Xbox 360 and the PS3 (very few who can afford it)  are adult men or older boys.

The games on the DS appeal to girls and small kids.  Nintendogs is a good example.

So looking at that standpoint, my original statement is correct.  It has been posted before that  statistic is close in accuracy.  Nintendo is a family oriented company.

I'm not saying that guys who own the DS are gay, girly or immature.  If you own a DS and you enjoy it, I'm happy for you.

Does that make me an idiot?  No

The DS is for girls and small children so go figure.

You're an idiot.  No... seriously.... you are.

Say you don't like it.  Say you're a Sony fanboy, but why do you spout ---Cleveland steamer--- like this?  What a dumbass.

Ark_ader feels like a big man when he plays his PSP.   :laugh2:

Why am I an idiot?

All those that have a DS (and the Wii) in my work and circle of friends are women and small children.  Those who own the PSP and Xbox 360 and the PS3 (very few who can afford it)  are adult men or older boys.

Ahh yes, I forgot that your "circle of friends" create the exact statistical replication of THE WORLD.  My mistake.   :dizzy:

The games on the DS appeal to girls and small kids.  Nintendogs is a good example.

Yeah, that's ONE EXAMPLE.  A bunch of DS games are popular with a large range of demographics.... you think Mario games are just for girls?  Metroid? Star Fox?  Castlevania, Phoenix Wright, Mario and Luigi... come on I'm not even trying here.   But yeah, totally right... DS is only for girls  :dizzy:

So looking at that standpoint, my original statement is correct.  It has been posted before that  statistic is close in accuracy.  Nintendo is a family oriented company.

You're not talking statistics.  You're talking about your friends... and sorry... the world includes more individuals then all 3 of those folks.  You're also basing your entire argument on Nintendo being a family company, which is true.... fun fact though, families include more than women and children.

I'm not saying that guys who own the DS are gay, girly or immature.  If you own a DS and you enjoy it, I'm happy for you.

I am so glad you are happy that I like my DS.  I actually love my PSP too.... crazy huh?

Does that make me an idiot?  No

Yeah... I still think it does.

Now knowing that, do you now feel like an idiot or a dumbass pointdablame?

No, not even in the slightest.  I like how you think this post has completely proven your "theory" when all you've done is repeat it and argue that "my friends would agree too, so take that doody head"

Sorry to tred on your Nintendo Fan Boy shoes..... :laugh2:

again, your reading comprehension and retention is atrocious.  I'm not a fanboy.  I had a PSP for almost a year before buying a DS.  I hated the feel and look and screen of the DS phat.  I'm a game fan, that's it.  I loved my N64 more than my PSX, and I liked my PS2 better than my Gamecube.  On most days, I still like the Dreamcast better than all of them.

You just need to get over the fact that you are an ignorant Sony fanboy, and all you're trying to do is project your insecurities.  Go buy every Sony product on the planet... but stop acting like an ass and saying everything in the world besides it is inferior.

The PSP is a really good platform for gaming and watching movies.

The DS is for girls and small children so go figure.  Every title I see for the DS is cute and girly - no Vice City or Wipeout on the DS.....   :laugh2:

I own the PSP and DS.  Sorry, I like the DS games better.  That must make me a small child and/or a girl.  I better alert my girlfriend that she is, in fact, a gay pedophile.  ::)

Why are you laughing about the DS not having Vice City or Wipeout?  The PSP doesn't have New Super Mario Brothers.  HAR HAR HAR!

Are you under the impression that you can buy beer based solely on your preference in video game?  Playing GTA will not make you appear older - sorry bud.  They're just video games and just because they're rated M for Mature doesn't mean their content is the pinnacle of maturity.  It's still juvenile - just in a more graphic way that young kids may not be ready to understand (as the theory goes).

Finally - the PSP is horrible as a movie playing device, in my opinion.  As I said in the PS3 thread, I hate when Sony tries to multitask with their hardware.  Who actually buys UMD's when you can get the regular DVD (with special features and better quality) for the same price?  You can transfer DVDs to the memory stick duo - but for me it's always been a frustrating trial and error with the settings and it always looks like crap and if I have my PSP I'm probably just going to use it to play games anyway so who the heck cares?

Music?  Too bulky as a portable music player - get an iPod or similiar (and you can watch videos on those too, and it's a heck of a little better).

I have to run and fix my pigtails - I'm going to play me some Elite Beat Agents.  Grrrrrrl Power!   ;D

I always thought the psp was for people that didn't like video games??

I mean there are next to no playable games on the thing and the ones that are seem to be nothing more than re-hashes of games you played a few years prior on the ps2, only now you have a crappy "nubbin" instead of a nice analog stick.  But you can play UMD movies on it ... umm wait no those are pretty much dead.  Oh you can play your music on it... umm wait it uses expensive flash media for storage, it's huge and you can still get a decent mp3 player with biggere storage cheaper than it.  Oh you can play your own movies on it .... on it's glorious 4 inch screen.  (Can someone explain to me why people want to watch videos on portables?  Seems dumb to me.)

Basically if you want a system you can play some emulators on and nothing else then the psp is for you.

Now if you like to play actual games, then you better get yourself a ds.  ;)

Agreed on the video thing.  I got a Video iPod for father's day last year (the concept of me getting presents on father's day is still incredibly weird).  In the beginning I threw a bunch of videos on there, but WTF?  Where am I that I'm going to just be sitting in one place long enough to watch a movie, or even a half-hour TV show on a 2.5" screen?  ---fudgesicle--- that.  If I'm going to sit down and watch a movie for two hours I'll sit on a sofa and watch it on a big screen, or I'll sit in a theater and watch it on a bigger screen.  The beauty of an iPod, IMO, is that I can listen to it while I'm driving or at the gym, etc.  It lets me enjoy my media while I do something else.  If ALL I'm doing at the moment is enjoying my media there are FAR superior ways to enjoy it.  That goes for video AND music, for that matter.

Anyway, to add insult to injury, the videos not only turned out to be virtually useless, but also took up a disproportionately large amount of space.  Needless to say, I no longer have any videos on my iPod.

Also, just to throw this out there . . . considering that the DS is ---smurfing--- demolishing PSP in sales numberrs, I have a hard time believing that the DS is only for girls and small children.

I think anything that doesn't meet your expectations seems dumb to you.  As for why anyone would want to watch movies on a 4" screen, consider a 23+ trip to Asia in a tiny seat with the seat in front of you reclined.  Now imagine that there are 6 in-flight movies to choose from that all suck and no electrical outlet to plug a laptop or portable DVD player into.  That's when a PSP, a couple of memory sticks and rented UMD's, and 14 hours worth of battery power (the stock battery and a $20 extended-life spare) start looking pretty nice.

That's in addition to all the TV shows and movies I watch on my lunch hour or on shorter flights.  I like my PSP for games also but I think I spend as much or more time watching video.

I can't see myself ever using it as an MP3 player.

I watch movies on my PSP all the time.  Much easier to deal with than a laptop on a plane, and a bright high contrast screen -> widescreen at that.  I use DVDFab Platinum to convert my dvd's to psp format and store em on one of my MS Duo's.

To each their own, the DS is a nice machine too, but I LIKE my psp.....so sue me.
