Super Paper Mario Wii
« on: April 02, 2007, 08:06:59 pm »
Well this is one game that I'm finally looking foward to.  I purchased Zelda on the gamecube, so I admit my wii hasn't gotten much play so far.  The only other game I have is cod 3 and its on its way to be traded in.  Here are some screenshots/videos for people that haven't seen it.  Looks great, and comes out in just a few days:

This is the game that will make me buy a Wii once I find one.  I thought Zelda would do it, but it didn't.

Then again, I could just mooch off my roommate for a bit longer :)

Either way, it looks amazing.  I can't wait.

You know what game it slightly reminds me of?  The warioworld on the gamecube.  Don't get me wrong I think it will be 100 times better, just the 2d/3d aspect made me think of it.

Just noticed that there are 2 new videos, and about 5 new images up.  Just watched the bowser fire one, and its awesome.  Looks like we'll have lots of items to do different things with.

Well this afternoon at lunch I was lucky enough to play the game at ebgames for around 10 minutes.  I am very impressed so far.  It was fun, and the controls worked great.  A couple of things to note that I did not know before:

You have a meter bar, and decreases once you go into 3d mode.  If you let it run all the way down you start loosing health.  Once you go back to 2d mode that bar starts to rise.

If you turn the remote vertical, it automatically switches to pointer mode.  You don't have to hit any buttons, it acts kind of link a flashlight with one of the pixels helping you.

Had alot of fun with it for the 10 minutes I got to play it.

Traded in my copy of COD3 towards a preorder for this last week.  Only got 16.50, and I rarely trade in games, but I really hated COD 3 on the wii so its ok.

I'll be going to pick the game up during lunch either tomorrow or Tues, whenever it comes in :).  Taking off school for the night to play and watch the shield.

I think its great fun.

If you liked the last two Paper Marios, you should easily like this.

I'd say its pretty much a normal Paper Mario without the Turn Based battles, its all stomping like a classic Mario.

If youre wanting it for the platformer elements, I think the story gets in the way since the game stops you all the time to tell you something...

The first few hours are definitely dialog heavy, and I will be honest and say I miss the turn based battles, but overall, I'm really loving the game.

I'm really enjoying the game so far although I haven't gotten to play that much.  I've made it through the first 2 chapters so I'm on 1-3 I think.  My only dislike is all the text, but I know its coming from a rpg type background.

The game really mixes old school mario with a new twist.  I love how they incorporated alot of old mario levels into this.

Having too much fun with this. It's an RPG, but it's a side-scrolling platformer at the same time. And it's got enough nostalgic stuff thrown in to really apease those that have grown up with the game from the beginning.

If Zelda didn't make people buy a Wii, this one will (if people can find them yet).

Side note: though I loathe the place, EB Games/Game Stop has a deal going right now; get a new Wii game when you trade in two used Wii games.

Best Buy has Open Season and Far Cry for $20 each. Gamespot magasine had a $5 off any Wii game at Best Buy (image of coupons can be found at Fat Wallet). Coupon expires April 14.

I also had a $5 Best Buy rewards coupon. 20 +20 -5 -5 -5 = $25 net cost for Super Paper Mario.

Believe me, I wouldn't have done this if it wasn't saving me money.

**story mode**

So I bring my two games into Game Stop, which is located conviently in the same parking lot as Best Buy. Give the pimply-faced clerk my two games and say I'd like to reserve SPM. He scans them both in, takes my info.

CLERK: "That'll be $34.99 + tax."

DO: ???????????? Excuse me, um, you have a promotion going on right now?!? Trade two, get one?!?

CLERK: Aw, man, I wish they would tell us these things.

DO: Well, it IS on your website.

CLERK: Let me ask the manager. (To himself: Oh, he's on the phone, it must be important, I'll wait 'til he's done).

You can imagine me by this point. I start looking around the store casually. Right behind me is a 3FT, X 4FT SIGN WITH THE DAMN DEAL ON IT PRINTED IN HUGE --I'm attempting to get by the auto-censor and should be beaten after I re-read the rules-- LETTERS!!

DO: Ah, dude? The signs right there.

Clerk walks over to the sign, and starts reading all the fineprint out loud, to make sure I still qualify (I'm shaking my head at this point).

Pimply-faced manager finishes his phone call; clerk tells him I want to trade the two for one, and points at the sign. Now THE MANAGER goes over to the sign and reads the fineprint out loud all over again. Now I'm shaking my head and laughing in disgust at this point.

He walks over to the register, looks a bit puzzled, and makes a phone call.

MGR: So this guy wants to do the 2 for 1 Wii trade. How do I ring that up?

PHONE: ...

MGR: So I adjust the buyback price, and that makes the game free?

PHONE: ...

MGR: OK, so I adjust the buyback price and it makes the game free? OK. Now, if I ADJUST the buyback price, that'll fix everything?

PHONE: ...

MGR: OK then, I'll just adjust the buyback price.

(I'm busting up inside now).

So now the manager breaks out the caluclator to do the math, and figures out that $49.99 - $15 = $34.99. Proceeds to FINALLY ring it up.

MGR: So did you hear about the other Mario Games that are coming out?

DO: Yeah, Party, Strikers, Galaxy, Smash, blah, blah...

MGR: So would you like to pre-order Mario Part...

DO: NO. I just need to go.

MGR: But it'll sell out really qui...

DO: I want...to go...now. Give me...my...receipt.

Just a lovely all-around shopping experience

RELAX and just have fun.

I just picked it up today.  I really hate all the dialogue so far but there's some amazing creativity in the level designs that makes the game a lot of fun.  I'm no fan of RPG's but I think this one is sucking me in.  My wife says she much prefers the old school NES SMB but she was saying that for over an hour while playing Paper Mario before I finally dragged her off the Wii to eat.

This is the least RPG-like RPG you'll ever play in my opinion.  I know that's what they are touting it as, but I hope people that "don't like RPGs" still give this game a shot, cuz it's not really an RPG.

I played a bit more since I last posted and am still really enjoying it.  It'll probably eat up a lot of my time in the coming days heh.

That's how I usually describe Panzer Dragoon Saga.

I haven't been tempted by many of the Wii games yet but this one does it.  I love the first party Nintendo games.

Of course, I still have to get and beat Thousand Year Door.

Yeah it's very light on the RPG elements, but my big gripe against RPGs is the constant interruptions for dialogue.  I was getting pretty frustrated at first when it took 10-15 minutes to start jumping on koopas.

Can you skip through them?  I don't mind then when you can just press a button and get past the dialog.

You can't skip directly through them in one shot, but pressing the '2' button will jump the dialog to the next box, so you can skip them fairly quickly.

A bit of a nuisance, but I actually like the story so far.  Then again, I have played a few RPGs in my day so I guess I'm just used to it, even though I'm far from a "RPG player"

And Chad, DEFINITELY go get Thousand Year Door.  Man, I love that game so much.  It's fantastic... it'll likely suck you in very quickly.  If you have a DS, pick up Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time as well.

I don't have a DS yet... When I get through LEGO Star Wars II, next up is Double Dash as we finally got that.  Maybe Thousand Year Door will be shortly after that.

I'm at about 27% in LEGO SW II.

After my apparently month-long bathroom renovation, I picked this up and took a break today.  I rather like it.  The platforming mechanics aren't as solid as I would like ..  it's still fun, but not "mario flawless" when you jump around.  This is to be expected though as they out-sourced this one.  The doesn't mean it isn' better than any 2d platformer I've played in a long time, i'm just saying... don't expect smb 3.

As the trend has been over the last severl years in these games, the powerups suck.  No suprise there though.

I also hate the lengthy text boxes, but the sick sense of humor in the dialog is worth all the reading.  The game even pokes fun at the opening sequences being a tad long when mario begins to nod-off during one of the lengthy back-story segments.

One question.  Why is mario mute?  Ever since mario 64 we haven't been able to shut him up and now all he can do is grunt?  It's 2007, ditch the boxes and let the people speak!

heh, yeah.

It is like that in Partners in Time as well, and I'm pretty sure it's the same in Thousand Year Door.  Not sure why.

I'm liking this game more and more as I go on.  I got bowser this morning and that made all the difference..... finally a character that isn't a total wimp!  20 monsters in your path?  No problem!  Flame on!

What is getting annoying now is constantly having to swap items/characters/ect by searching through menus.  Seems like all of that could have been done via hot-swap with the minus and b buttons, which aren't really used.

The 1+2 shortcut button for the menu is pretty quick.. .it's not that bad if you ask me.  I prefer it actually over the option of pressing minus 5 times to get to the Pixl I want, for instance.

4 portraits of flowers and 3 boxes to switch the color.  I set it to the colors they hint at but nothing happens.

Ugh... buying a game this early means no gamefaq help.  :(

I periodically get gamefaq help, and it pisses me off.  I only resort to cheating after like three hours of banging my head against the wall trying to figure something out.

Gamefaqs aren't really cheating man.  They guide you though a game, but you still have to beat it yourself.  That's like saying it's cheating if a boxer asks his coach for advice.

i don't buy it. if you use a guide then you cheated. your coach analogy is more akin to using the manual that came with the game, not the guide.

i've had to use gamefaqs once or twice, and hated myself for it.

the only person that is hurt however is the cheater, because the feeling of accomplishment is taken away.

think about it in the context of a school test. the problem is 2+2 and you are stumped. you ask your teacher for "advice" he/she says "try putting down 4. see if that is right"

now was that really advice?

sure they only "guided" you to the answer......but you were the one that had to write it down!!

problem is writing it down isn't the hard part, the solving of the problem is.

I use gamefaqs all the time.  It's generally not due to me being stumped, but poor game design.

My example above is a prefect one.  Turns out the last protrait had a bombable floor.  The problem is bombable floors in SPM are supposed to either show up with the inspect feature, or have cracks in the flloor.  This one didn't.  There was no clue to bomb the flloor either.  I can only assume that one of the devs screwed up.

And it absolutely postiviely is not cheating!!!!!  The faq I used, for example did not give you the color code, it just mentioned the part about the floor because somebody screwed up.  I figured out the puzzle element myself.  Also when a faq tells you the best strat to use on a boss or something you still have to kill the frikkin boss yourself!!!!

So yes my analogy still stands.

Regardless, do you really find it more enjoyable to spend hours upon hours replaying the same section over and over because you missed something or the designers didn't give you enough info to figure it out youself?  Is that really better than just looking up that section, finishing the level and getting back to, o I dunno PLAYING THE FRIKKIN GAME?

contextually your use of a guide is valid.

you say you only use a guide when there is poor game design, but how are you able to decide when the reason you are stumped is due to that.

i agree, i hate running around a level or levels (metroid prime series) trying to figure out what little detail, or lack of i missed.

some people buy guides with the game, and use it to play through the game. is that cheating?

where is the line?

I'm only  up to world 4 since I spent two hours trying my luck in that hundred room pit.  I made it up to 59.  I should have waited til I had Bowser because I could imagine it'd be a lot easier.

I periodically get gamefaq help, and it pisses me off.  I only resort to cheating after like three hours of banging my head against the wall trying to figure something out.

I'm even worse than that.  I've not finished games because I won't look at faqs.  I never finished Metroid Prime because I couldn't figure out the technique for beating that giant ass pirate guy near the end.

Then again, I tried for two weeks to find help on a part where I was stuck on N64 Paperboy, and there wasn't ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- out there to help me.   :laugh2:
