swap a dreamcast controller analog to joystick how to?
« on: April 02, 2007, 02:18:12 pm »
anyone know a site or link to swap a dreamcast controller analog to joystick?

I am wondering if anyone know's how to get a dreamcast controller analog joystick converted over to a regular arcade joystick?

I am not looking to do the D-pad or button's I already know how to do all of them on all the console's already but I was wondering if anybody found a method to convert the analog joystick over to a regular joystick or convert the analog to a D-pad function.

I would like to make a dreamcast arcade machine but do not want to be limited to the D-pad function only I would like to be able to play any game they made for it and wondering if this can be done yet if not any progress on it yet so I can figure it out.

Many of the actual arcade sticks that came out already do this. Buy one that does, and hack in your components.

I can hack the analog stick on the dreamcast pad (making it function as a digital stick).

here are some older console control signals in case anyone wanted to do a different console.

alright so I looked all over for a few hours again and did not find much

happ wants $120.00+ after shipping for one of those wich cost more then my whole cab project so I definatly will not be getting of them I mean jeez it is only a joystick analog or not.

ultimarc has some but they are usb and I have no clue how to wire them in to a DC controller analog wise off a usb cord.

 HarumaN

that can be done by just wiring the signal's to HED 1-4 correct?

but also it would only work like a regular joystick that way and would lose the pressure sensor part right?

I am wanting to use a joystick of some sort for the analog but still keep it acting like a analog do you know of a way to do it or just wire like the triggers only and get the same full force effect?

I have a box of pc flight sticks I was thinking of pulling them apart and looking to see if I cannot wire them into the thumbstick HED's and rig a decent joystick to replace the big ugly flight stick part anyone think this can be done or has it been attempted and failed already?

That is correct.  As far as I know, no one has been able to hack the analog stick while keeping it analog.

I'm on a mission then and will see if I cannot make something up.

I heard something with a 49way joystick and hooking 2.5 volt to the leads but it made no sense to me really.

still scratchin my head and tearing pc analog joysticks apart trying to find a solution.

how ever I may have found a simple and cheap solution but it is kind of goofy and would not take much rough abuse but I am going to try to work with it for something till I can figure out something better.

I have not tried this yet but going to take one of these psp analog's

they have 4 nice solder points on the bottom of the assembly's pcb and I would attach 4 wire's to each of the wires with terminal quik disconnect's and then desolder the stock dreamcast analog assembly off the pcb "hard way" or just solder to the bottom of the analogs legs under the DC pcb "easy way" and the install some wire's to the now exposed points and add some quik disconnects to them I still need to get one in first to figure out how to install it in a mdf cotrol panel and add a mini joystick to it like one small enough for a thumb and index finger but it should work but like I said kinda small goofy and breakable if it took a hard hit but it may work for less then $20.00 and a hours work if that.

I am still trying to figure out something better though.

That's probably not gonna work...  seeing as how the "stock dreamcast analog assembly" consists of 4 hall effect sensors.

Has anyone tried <a href="http://www.arcadecollecting.com/info/49way_to_Hall.gif">the circuit</a> that's linked to on the main site?

yeah I guess I would need to see if the psp has hall effect also or not but if so I should be able to wire it into the dc pcb.

I too would be interested to see how this works out I am currently working on my second cab and am gonna stick a Dreamcast in it my only problem is I too dont want to be limited to games that only use the d pad. But looks like I might have to settle on that as this sounds very expensive and way too confusing for my tiny brain I lost you guys after the first few posts  :dizzy:

Xarcade can swap from analog to digital by pressing a key assignment.  It does the same for the Xbox too.  Granted they are a bit pricey but I have seen the solo controllers going for less than 50.00 on ebay.

You could hack a Mad Catz....

But that doesn't give you true analogue.

I dont think the xarcade does what I am trying to do but i will check into it.

if you mean the mad catz controller only difference in them to a stock dreamcast controller is the trigger buttons are digital and suposedly easier to solder on then the stock dc but they both can be done but I am trying to get the thumbstick to work with a larger joystick in it's place and have the actual pressure sensitive action and not act like a digital automatic full press.

wires can be ran to the controller's analog H.E.D's and ran to a regular arcade joystick and work but it loose's the actual anolog function wich is the pressure sensitive function so like this the joystick would act like a normal arcade joystick with the full open close switch function but it will not have any pressure control and that is what I am trying to figure out there has got to be an easy solution somehow just have to find it or make it.

Do you think its actually possible to achieve this? would be great if so Having all the Dreamcast games available on a cab would be so much better than a hand full of games.

You got it backwards...  only a handful of games require use of the analog stick.

Nope, not at all.  The only games using the analog stick that come to mind are the few racing games on the dc, but most people use a wheel for those anyway.
