Electrohome G07 - Can I put a new(used) neck board on this?
« on: March 30, 2007, 04:05:25 pm »
Here is the current tube.

Can I take the neck off of this one and put it on the broken one?

The guy I got the cabinet off of says that the colors will never be right even with a new neck board.

If they are both G07's (which it looks like they are) then yes you can switch neckboards.  I've done this many times, most recently on a Wizard of Wor who's owner dropped it on it's back (it has a neck hump), cracking the neckboard but miraculously not the neck.

First, discharge your tubes to be safe.

Place both chassis' side-by-side on your workbench (or table/desk/etc.).  There are 6 wires going to the neckboard from the main board.  There is a thick white wire coming from the focus/brightness controls, and 5 thinner colored wires (white, brown, red, yellow, and black) which coil around pins soldered into the neckboard.  I believe the holes are labeled with the wire color, but maybe not.  Don't try to uncoil the wires from the pins.  Just unsolder the pins themselves.  If the holes are not labeled, completely remove the new neckboard from the chassis it is attached to, then transfer pins one at a time from the old neckboard to the same spot on the new one.  The large white wire goes into the yoke pin connector.  If you look closely, you will see how a small flathead can release the clips on the plastic housing where the wire goes in.  This will pull out of the way and allow you to unsolder the wire, and replace with the new wire.  Don't forget to snap the plastic back shut.  As long as the drive transistors and pots are good, the colors should look fine.

Also, while you have the neckboard off, replace the cap on it.  And replace all the caps on your main chassis if you have not and while you have it out.

There shouldn't be a reason to switch neckboards.  Ever.  Even Randy Fromm agrees with this.  It's in his Blue Book.

If there are color issues, you may have tube problems.  Perhaps even transistor problems on the existing neckboard.

Ever?  If you look closely at his top picture, you will see that his neckboard is clearly broken in two pieces - half is next to the yoke and half is down by the chassis.  No sense throwing away a good chassis over a busted neckboard.

While some might say you can create solder bridges and "reconnect" the neckboard, I'd rather he just swap the neckboard, unless the other chassis works.  In that case, it's easier to swap the whole chassis.

That's one of two possible exceptions.  Yes, he could fix it...but time/energy/effort, in this case swapping them is likely the best bet.  He should, however, make sure that all components are identical between the boards, because of what happened to me...

The second exception (well, not really, but I was looking for a quick fix) was a neckboard I had on a K4600.  Fire up the monitor and there was instant sparks flying from the neckboard.  There was a nice char spot on it.  I didn't futz with it too much, I just pulled another neckboard from a junk chassis and swapped it.  Didn't have the opportunity to fire it up beforehand, I shelved it for a couple months.  I tossed the old neckboard in the trash before I did.  When I finally fired it up, I had brightness issues.  I can't 100% for certain say it wasn't there beforehand, but if I had verified the components between the boards before I tossed the old one, I may have saved myself some headache.

I am hoping to get a complete chassis/neck board combo. The chassis in the broken picture is shot.
Thanks for the advice fellas!

You can get a complete working one from eldorado games for $95 if you send them you're non-working one as an exchange.  Don't know if they'd accept the broken neckboard one for exchange or not...

Lots of G07 chassison ebay all the time. Your neckboard is clearly busted in half. I just fixed a G07 with the main board busted around the flyback. 25 broken traces later, lots of soldering, some epoxy glue and all works well again.

I'm guessing the second G07 isn't working?  You could always swap the entire chassis if that were the case.

The second G07 is an auction that I am watching that is untested. The guy is willing to strip and ship everything but the tube and frame. I would be putting all of the stuff onto my existing tube with the broken neck-board.
