PS2 Repair Questions
« on: March 26, 2007, 08:09:24 am »
I got a PS2 that is in great shape.  However, when ever you put a disk in, it makes a kind of grinding noise, almost like the drive is catching on something and is having a hard time spinning.  It reads disks, but takes a long time to load them.  To the point that its basically unplayable because of the slow read times.

Now, I've fixed disk read errors int eh past, but this seems different and I just wanted some opinions before I crack the case open and start on this one.

Thanks

check to see if the laser rails are dry. I had the same prob as the laser was moving very slowing and had that grinding noise also.

the laser rails are the poles that the laser slide's back and forth on I like to use hair clipper oil on them as loob like said from the other member try that and if it is still doing it see if the pitch screw is to tight it is  a little black screw on the arm of the laser that slide's on the pole it also adjust the angle of the laser toward the disk so just check it and make sure it is not tight and cuasing it to skip or drag but not to loose either becuase of the angle it may cuase disk read errors and last if still doing check the laser height adjuster it may be to lowor to high and hitting something.

and only other thing I can think of is pull the top off and try it and see if the laser keeps hitting the spindle motor repeatidly and if so the black arm that sense's the motor needs to stop before it hits it is either worn out or broken off.

I believe the problem has to do with the height of the laser.  The grinding noise is a dead givaway.  If you take off the cover and eject the disc tray you will see a white circular cog.  You can turn this to raise or lower the height of the laser.  Its a tedious process, but easy to do.  Mark where you started, move it one direction, one click at a time.  Try disc.  If problems persist then repeat process.  If it gets worse go in opposite direction.  As long as you mark where you started you should be fine.

Good luck and PM me if you get stuck.

it will reset itself to the lowest setting if you raise it to high if you over do it on one direction like stated above.

The rails were fine.  It ended up being that the lazer was geared up too high.  I lowered it a couple of notches and its all good.  Just need to test it on a few more games to be sure, but god of war 2 ran great.
