Using Luan

Has anyone here finished any projects featuring stained Luan? (any projects, not necessarily arcade related) I understand that is a cheap Mahogany alternative but is usually painted or used as cabinet backs, drawer bottoms, etc. Can Luan be used in a "starring roll" and stained to a nice finish?

I made coffee table and few more furniture from Luan when I lived in Japan.

Here is the same table, on the first pic, only clear varnish and on the second, stained and varnished (orders, you know...)

And I liked the unstained...

Very nice niki. A coffee table is on my project list. The drawers are a nice touch. I much prefer natural wood tones too.

I also prefer the natural wood but if I want to get a router like in your avatar, it's better not to argue...

It's my wife's design and usually she gets all the compliments to the point that I have to step in and say "hey, what about the one that built it"...to get some " yeh, well, it's ok"...

The mortise and tenon where made with a Bosch 400W (a little bit more than 1/2 HP) router and many, many passes.
With yours, it would be much easier...
