Defender dip switches in MAME
« on: March 19, 2007, 10:46:24 pm »

Can you access the Defender dip switches in MAME?

How?

Must be the same in Robotron too?

I'm guessing it's the same way you access the DIPs in any game in Mame.

I see what spacies is talking about.  It appears as though there aren't any dip switches available for either of those games.

I went through this hassle too... I found out you have to hold down both F1 and F2 while making the dip changes with the assigned keys... Its either the + and - or keyboard Z key by default if I remember correctly.
Once you actually get in there, you'll find it doesn't get any less cryptic. This should help.

Ressurecting an old thread because I'm looking at the advance right now, and 16-27 are not as posted above. Not that I can find a way to change the values. And +, -, and z do absolutely nothing.

Maybe the process changed with later versions of MAME, but I'd expect the DIP's would always be the same (?). I posted that message regarding setup of the .84 version of MAME.

It was correct then, because that same MAME/Defender revision is still running on my cab with the DIP settings I put in way back when I posted that. I backed the difficulty off because it was difficult to play using the bat top sticks of my original cab.  :)

You navigate it entirely with F1 + F2 and '9'

It's not too intuitive, but Williams are to blame for that, not MAME.

pressing F1 + F2 gets you through menus
pressing 9 increases values
pressing F1+9 decreases values

etc.

Thank you. Now, since the difficulty dips aren't labeled, and they aren't as TOK showed above, but instead 0-99, what are they?

There are no DIP 18 and 19 in your version of MAME?
Liberal is easy, Moderate is medium, and Conservative is hard in the original Williams settings.

The dips are numbered, but not labled. And they have no words in the 'value' sections. They have two digits, range of 0-99.

The DIP functions are in the list I posted, which is from the original machine. Follow the acceptable values indicated and they will work.

Okay, I wasn't getting it. I kept having the image of the Robotron service menu in mind, where it shows the number AND tells you what it corresponds to. Thanks.

I put it at the lowest settings for both. The game doesn't seem any easier. Goes in the shred pile.

Defender on Easy still isn't Easy.  :)
Definitely worth hanging in there with. Its one of the few games I don't think I'll ever get tired of because every game is different and challenging.
